San Antonio FC News Release
SAN ANTONIO, TX - San Antonio FC extended their unbeaten streak to five matches after drawing Oklahoma City Energy FC 0-0 at Toyota Field on Saturday. The match marked the third encounter between the two teams on the season.
"We'll take that point," SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. "It's a game that could go either way. They had a game plan that was well constructed and well thought out, and made it difficult for us for most of the evening. But we're unbeaten for five games now, so we'll take that as a positive."
The first half of the match remained scoreless after both teams went back and forth in possession, with neither side finding a chance dangerous enough to test the goalkeepers.
Two red cards were issued in the 69th minute after Energy FC midfielder Michael Thomas and SAFC goalkeeper Josh Ford were involved in a scuffle following a corner kick from the visitors, leaving both teams with ten men. Substitute goalkeeper Matt Cardone played the rest of the match in goal for the hosts.
"Matt [Cardone] did well," said Powell. "You never know when your moment comes, so you have to be ready for the moment. Matt was ready for his, and he did fine. It's a tough situation for a goalkeeper to come into the game in the heat of the battle. He should take a lot of confidence from that performance."
San Antonio came close to finding the winning goal twice in the second half, once through a Rafa Castillo free kick, and once through a header by Franck Tayou, whose attempt was denied by the crossbar.
SAFC forward Taylor Morgan made his debut for the club, recording one shot in 60 minutes of play. Taylor joined the club on June 22 from Tulsa Roughnecks FC.
San Antonio FC will play at home twice over the next two weeks. The team will host Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 on July 16 and LA Galaxy II on July 23.
