August 28, 2018 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
San Antonio FC News Release
SAN ANTONIO, TX - San Antonio FC (9-9-7) travel to face RGV FC (4-9-12) at H-E-B Park on Wednesday, Aug. 29. The match marks the second edition of the South Texas derby this season and will be broadcast on ESPN3 as the USL Game of the Week with kickoff at 7:00 pm.
SAFC heads into the match after narrowly falling 1-2 at home to Swope Park Rangers on Saturday. The Alamo City club will look to build on their second-half performance over the weekend, during which the team recorded 16 shots, six on target, and 10 chances created after going down two goals early in the match.
"We know what is required of the group going into Wednesday," SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. "All our games are very meaningful at this point in the season, and when you play a rival it really adds to the occasion. Our job is to focus on the task at hand and to do what we need to improve on our performance from the second half of our match on Saturday."
The Alamo City club will count on the availability of three former RGV FC players in midfielders Charlie Ward, Jose Escalante, and forward Kyle Murphy. Ward leads the team with a 91.5 percent passing accuracy so far this season while also creating 12 chances in eight appearances, while Escalante and Murphy have tallied a goal apiece so far this season.
SAFC is 2-4-1 all-time against RGV FC, most recently playing to a 0-0 draw at H-E-B Park in May. The club earned its first South Texas Derby wins last season after beating RGV 1-0 in the opening match of the campaign and later beating the Toros for the first time at Toyota Field 3-1 in the last match of the season.
RGV FC will look to earn its second consecutive win after recording a 2-0 win at Orange County SC on Saturday. The club is currently in 15th place in the standings, while SAFC finds itself in 10th place and will look to get back into winning form as it continues its push for a playoff run.
"I think (there's extra motivation) in any game where we're playing another team from Texas," Powell said. "Regardless of the level, it gives an extra incentive because we want to prove that we're the most competitive team in the state."
