August 28, 2018 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Philadelphia Union II News Release
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After leading Bethlehem Steel FC to victories over Ottawa and Nashville, midfielder Santi Moar and defender Matt Mahoney were named to the USL Team of the Week for Week 24.
The accolades mark the first time in Steel FC history that the club has earned multiple players in the same week and pushes Steel FC's appearances on the USL Team of the Week to 12 this season. Mahoney's appearance is the first his career while Moar's appearance his third of 2018 and fourth of his career.
A native of Buffalo, New York, Mahoney continued to shine in the defense but in a different role as a left-sided center back. Joining the team as a right back in 2017, Mahoney led Steel FC to a home shutout against Ottawa Fury FC and then aided the club to its sixth road victory of 2018. Playing all 180 minutes last week, the 23-year-old made seven interceptions and seven clearances while winning 15 of 20 duels.
On the other end of the pitch, Moar lifted Steel FC to its shutout victory against Ottawa with his second career brace. The 24-year-old bagged his first goal of the afternoon in the 16th minute and followed up with a conversion from the penalty spot 16 minutes later. Moar's Week 24 accolade joins his 2018 appearances from Week 8 and 12 in addition to Week 29 of 2017.
The duo pushes Steel FC's appearances on the USL Team of the Week to 12 in 2018 with the following players previously making appearances this season: Jake McGuire (Week 22), Olivier Mbaizo (Week 21), Brenden Aaronson (Week 20), Drew Skundrich (Week 16), Nanco (Week 15), Derrick Jones (Week 14), Fabian Herbers (Week 10), Brandon Allen (Week 1).
Bethlehem Steel FC returns to league action with a home match against in-state rival Penn FC on Sunday, September 2. Kick off from Goodman Stadium on the campus of Lehigh University is slated for 3 p.m. which will be broadcast on Service Electric and ESPN+.
