San Antonio FC News Release
SAN ANTONIO, TX - San Antonio FC will host Liga MX Clausura Champions Santos Laguna in an exhibition match at Toyota Field on July 8 at 7:30 p.m. The match marks the second-ever international friendly for SAFC since the club's inception prior to the 2016 season.
The July 8 match is included in the San Antonio FC Season Ticket Package, and individual game tickets will go on sale today at 4 p.m. Fans will be able to purchase tickets by visiting SanAntonioFC.com or by calling 210-444-5657.
"We are excited to once again bring the Liga MX champions Santos Laguna to the Alamo City this summer, and challenge ourselves against one of the top teams in Mexico in a great atmosphere at Toyota Field," said SAFC Managing Director Tim Holt. "We are thrilled to reward our most committed fans for their passion and support of SAFC by including this match in our season ticket package."
Founded in 1988, Santos Laguna is one of the youngest yet most popular teams in Liga MX. The Coahuila club has won six first division titles, most recently winning the 2018 Clausura tournament. Santos also earned their first Copa MX title in 2014 after beating Puebla 4-2 in penalty kicks. Santos has played in the CONCACAF Champions League final on two occasions, falling to Monterrey both times in the 2011-12 and 2012-13 editions of the competition. The club is also notorious for fielding Mexican legend and club all-time leading scorer Jared Borgetti from 1996 to 2004, as well as Mexican international team goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez from 2007 to 2014.
The Torreon-based club recently completed their 2018 Clausura Championship season, defeating Toluca in the final after originally finishing fourth in the standings with 29 points in 17 matches. Santos navigated past Tigres, and Club America in the playoffs prior to their victory over Toluca to earn the title.
The game marks the third consecutive year that Santos Laguna has played in the Alamo City, as well as the club's second matchup with San Antonio FC at Toyota Field. SAFC and Santos played to a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes before the Mexican Champions eventually defeated San Antonio on penalty kicks.
San Antonio FC will host Sacramento Republic FC on June 16 followed by Reno 1868 FC on June 23 at Toyota Field. Fans can purchase tickets to both upcoming matches by calling the SAFC sales office at 210-444-5657 or by visiting SanAntonioFC.com.
