Nashville SC Smothers Rapids to Advance in U.S. Open Cup
June 7, 2018 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Nashville SC News Release
Nashville SC took down the Colorado Rapids of MLS 2-0 at Vanderbilt Stadium on Wednesday night to advance to the 5th round of the U.S. Open Cup. It extended Nashville's unbeaten run to nine games in all competitions and puts the club in the final 16 teams in the Open Cup. It's the first competitive win over an MLS team in Nashville SC's history.
90 in a Nutshell
A fortunate bounce sent Nashville ahead in the first half when Justin Davis' cross was knocked into the Rapids net by Colorado defender Michael Azira. While Colorado held the ball, the possession didn't result in much pressure, and Nashville went into the locker room up 1-0.
In the second half, Nashville came out again absorbing pressure and playing tight defense. Head coach Gary Smith then sent in forward Ropapa Mensah off the bench to provide a spark to the Nashville attack. The move paid dividends immediately as Mensah's first touch went into the net to put Nashville up 2-0 and bring the over 4,000 fans to a frenzy.
Goals
