Amarillo Dillas News Release

AMARILLO, TX - It took three strikeouts and a pitching change to get his first hit, but Amarillo Dillas designated hitter Sam McLain finally got on base, which happened to plate the winning run in the ninth inning as the Dillas defeated the Edinburg Roadrunners 3-2 Friday night in front of 2,657 fans at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa.

Amarillo reliever Coby Mavroulis (1-0) got the win, going one and two-thirds innings in relief, allowing no hits or runs while striking out the side in the ninth. Edinburg reliever Bryan Heaston (0-1) got the loss, giving up all three Amarillo hits in the ninth inning. Dillas starter Richard Jessup went an out past six innings in the no decision, giving up only one earned run and six hits. Roadrunners starter Miguel Martinez went eight innings, gave up two earned and five hits while striking out eight.

Edinburg would strike first in the first. The Roadrunners Vince Blue reached after back-to-back Dillas errors and would score on a Bryon Smith sacrifice fly to give Edinburg an early advantage of 1-0.

Amarillo would strike back in the next half inning thanks to a pair of walks. Both Keanon Simon and Andrew Wong reached on free passes and advanced a base on a Carlos Figueroa flyout. Terrance McClain singled to score Simon while Wong scored on a Trent Lockwood sacrifice fly to give Amarillo a 2-1 lead.

Edinburg would tie the game up in the fifth after Amado German walked, advanced to second on a groundout, to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Robert Matlock single to tie the game 2-2.

Both teams had prime opportunities to take the lead, but the game would remain tied through the middle of the ninth.

After Mavroulis struck out the side in the top of the ninth, Terrance McClain just missed a walkoff homerun to start the bottom half. Back-to-back singles by Lockwood and Stantrel Smith put two runners on for McLain. Despite swinging strikeouts in the second, fourth and seventh innings, hit a flare single to center field which scored Lockwood from second for a 3-2 Dillas win.

With the win, the Dillas improve to 5-4, while the Roadrunners fall to 6-3. Saturday, Amarillo will host Edinburg for the second game of a four-game series at 7:05pm with Dillas Pre-Game set to begin at 6:50pm online via AudioSportsOnline.com. Game time is tentative and is subject to blackout.
