Tacoma Rainiers News Release

Tacoma, WA - In the rare Triple-A game featuring two left-handed starters, southpaws Brian Johnson (Salt Lake) and Ian McKinney (Tacoma) traded scoreless frames until the late innings before the Bees (32-32) outlasted the Rainiers (33-30) by a 4-0 final. It was only the second time this season Tacoma has been shutout.

Jake Gatewood led off the Salt Lake seventh with a solo homer, his 17th and the first run of the game. McKinney allowed only four hits over 6.1 IP, striking out 10 with three walks.

For McKinney, it was a Triple-A career-high in strikeouts, although he had struck out 11 on two occasions at Double-A earlier this season.

The Bees padded their lead in the eighth, loading the bases on two singles and a walk before Anthony Bemboom's sacrifice fly made the score 2-0. It was 4-0 after Gatewood drove in the remaining runners with a two-run single, for three RBI on the day.

Johnson went eight innings, limiting Tacoma to just three hits and a walk. He struck out five before ceding to right-hander Jose Quijada, who finished the game in a non-save situation by retiring the side in order in the ninth.

The Rainiers will return to action on Monday, at 7:05 p.m. PT. RHP Logan Verrett will start for Tacoma, against Salt Lake lefty Packy Naughton.
