Lincoln Saltdogs News Release
LINCOLN, NEB. - The Lincoln Saltdogs added to their roster for the 2007 season with the signing of Beau Hintz and Corey Harrington, both of whom began their professional careers in the Seattle Mariners organization. A graduate of Pius X High School, Harrington becomes the third Lincoln native to sign with the Saltdogs in team history joining Lincoln High grad Brian Rodaway, who was recently traded to Atlantic City, and former Southeast Knight product Spencer Doyle.
In Harrington, the Saltdogs are getting a solid utility player who is listed as an infielder but someone who has seen significant playing time in the outfield as well. In 2002, he was a 17th-round draft pick of the Seattle Mariners organization where he spent two seasons. The first of which was a short-season with Everett (A) in the Northwest League. Harrington then spent all of 2003 with Wisconsin (A) in the Midwest League where he hit .258 in 93 games as a primarily a second baseman and left fielder. It was his final season in pro ball to date.
Prior to his time in professional baseball, Harrington played collegiately at the University of Kansas in 1999 where he lettered as a pitcher, infielder and designated hitter in 19 games. He transferred to New Mexico State where he spent his first season playing all three positions in the outfield. As a junior,
Harrington earned 1st-team All-Sun Belt Conference honors at shortstop in leading the Aggies to the league title. At the plate, he hit .322 with eight homeruns, a team-high 81 runs and a school record 42 stolen bases in what turned out to be his final collegiate season.
During his high school career at Pius X, Harrington was a team captain and a finalist for Nebraska Athlete-of-the-Year honors in 1998. In earning all-state honors as a senior, he hit .435 with 30 stolen bases for head coach Jim Hansen. Harrington was also an all-city point guard in basketball and an all-state wide receiver in football for the Thunderbolts who won two state titles with him in the lineup.
Like Harrington, Hintz is making a return after being out of the game since 2003 when he was released by the Seattle organization. A native of Stockton, Calif., Hintz entered pro ball in 2001 and then sat out all of 2002 because of injury. The left-handed pitcher returned a year later and finished 3-4 with a save for Wisconsin where he and Harrington were teammates. Of note, the 26-year-old Hintz was selected by the Mariners in the 10th round of the 2001 draft (No. 310 overall) one spot ahead of former Saltdog and Nebraska Cornhusker pitcher Thom Ott, who was taken by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ben Fox, another former Saltdog pitcher, was the 300th selection by San Diego that same year.
The Saltdogs begin the 2007 season on May 10 at Pensacola with the home opener set for May 22 against St. Joe. For team and ticket information, go to www.saltdogs.com.
