Lincoln Saltdogs News Release
LINCOLN, NE - The Lincoln Saltdogs on Friday acquired the rights to left-handed pitcher Zach Cline from American Association rival Pensacola. The transaction completes the trade from May 19th of last year, when Lincoln sent Cline to Pensacola for a player to be named later.
The 25-year-old Cline made just two starts for Lincoln in 2008, going 1-1 with a 6.35 ERA. Ironically, both of those starts came against Pensacola. After being traded to the Pelicans, Cline went 5-8 the rest of the way, but posted a very respectable 3.97 ERA in 17 games, including 16 starts. Overall, Cline finished 2008 with a 6-9 record and a 4.22 ERA.
Cline's professional career began in 2004, after he was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies. He missed all of the 2005 campaign due to injury, so 2009 marks his fifth season in the pro ranks. In addition to pitching for three different Phillies minor-league affiliates, Cline has also seen time in the Frontier and Atlantic leagues. His overall minor-league record is an impressive 30-20, with an even 4.00 ERA.
Lincoln's current roster now includes 23 players, including 13 pitchers. American Association teams may carry as many as 28 players on a roster during the offseason and preseason.
