Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Gary, Ind. - Northern League RBI leader Bryan Warner had four hits including an eighth inning tie-breaking two-run single to lead the Lincoln Saltdogs to a 10-7 win over the Gary SouthShore RailCats on Monday night. The two teams ended the night in a tie for third place, two games out of first, with 12 games to play in the first half race.
The Saltdogs pounded out 19 hits, most this season by a RailCats opponent, in winning their fourth straight game. Albenis Machado joined Warner with four hits.
Lincoln scored twice in the top of the first inning off RailCats starter Jamie Bennett, but the RailCats rallied for four runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. Jason Colson and Jose Yepez each delivered two-run singles for Gary in the inning as the RailCats sent nine batters to the plate.
The RailCats had golden opportunities to expand on their lead in the early innings and appeared to be on the verge of knocking Lincoln starter Michael Kesten out of the game as the Saltdogs had bullpen activity in each of the first three innings. But the RailCats failed to add additional runs despite having a runner at third with one out in the first and runners at second and third with no one out in the second. Kesten issued two walks in the third but still faced the minimum three hitters in the inning as he gained confidence and remained in the game into the sixth inning before allowing another run.
Lincoln scored two runs in the third to tie the game and took a 5-4 lead in the fourth on an RBI double by Pichi Balet.
The RailCats tied the game in the sixth when Yepez led off with a double and eventually scored on Curt Lee's sacrifice fly. In the seventh, the RailCats grabbed a 6-5 lead when Scott Samuels walked, went to second on a wild pitch and to third on an error before Colson delivered an RBI single to right to break the tie.
But Lincoln answered with a four-run eighth against RailCats reliever Randy Vanderplow (2-2). Cory Harris tied the game with a single to left and Warner delivered a two-run single to give Lincoln an 8-6 lead. Josh Patten added an RBI hit to make it 9-6.
The RailCats loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth but Brandon O'Neal struck out to end the threat and after Lincoln added a single run in the ninth, the RailCats posted a single tally in the bottom of the inning to account for the 10-7 final.
Vanderplow allowed seven hits and five runs in two innings to take the loss. Fernando De Aza (3-1) earned the win despite allowing the tie-breaking run in the seventh.
Anthony Iapoce went 3 for 3 for the RailCats and extended his consecutive game on-base streak to 26 straight.
The RailCats host the Saltdogs again Tuesday at 7:00 PM. Quintin Oldenburg (6-1, 3.59) starts for Gary against Lincoln's Brian Rodaway (5-1, 2.20).
