Salt Lake Bees News Release
Fresh off of a 12-game homestand, the Salt Lake Bees (53-58) are headed back to the Biggest Little City in the World for a six-game series against the Reno Aces (63-48), starting August 16 and running through August 21.
The Bees are coming off of back-to-back series against the Oklahoma City Dodgers and the Sacramento River Cats, all at Smith's Ballpark. They split the series with the Dodgers, winning the final two games of the series, but then dropped four of six to the River Cats, going 5-7 over two weeks.
Matt Thaiss hit .311 (14-for-45) with six extra-base hits, nine runs scored and eight walks worked during the homestand. The 27-year-old has reached base in 12-straight games to start the month of August and has also worked a walk in each of his last three games. Jake Palomaki hit .308 (12-for-39) with seven walks and six runs scored in 11 games. Kyle Barraclough made five appearances out of the bullpen and allowed just three hits while striking out 12 batters over 5.2 innings of work.
Orlando Martinez was named the Pacific Coast Player of the Week for his performance in the series against Sacramento. The Cuban native hit .429 (9-for-21) with six extra-base hits, 21 total bases, six runs scored, and a whopping 12 RBI. Martinez had two or more RBI in six-straight games, tying him for the longest streak in all of affiliated baseball. He is the third Bee to win the award this season, joining David MacKinnon and Jose Rojas.
The Salt Lake pitching staff continues to be the best in the PCL, posting a 4.88 ERA through 111 games. They have issued the fewest number of walks in the league (407) and have also allowed the fewest number of home runs as a staff (115). The Bees lead the league in WHIP (1.40) and are fourth in opponent batting average (.254).
The Bees on the road have been even better, posting a 4.34 ERA in opponent's ballparks. They have allowed just 56 home runs and have put together four shutouts away from Smith's Ballpark.
The Aces come into the week with a 8.5-game lead in the PCL West and the second-best record in the league. The Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks is coming off of a 12-game road trip in which they swept a six-game series against Las Vegas and split a six-game series against Albuquerque.
Reno's Stone Garrett leads the PCL in home runs (28), RBI (95), extra-base hits (54), and total bases (221). He is also ranked sixth in slugging (.574) and ninth in OPS (.909). Ryne Nelson, who is scheduled to start on Friday, is tied for the league lead in strikeouts (118) and wins (8) while being ranked second in innings pitched (118.0) and ninth in ERA (5.80).
Salt Lake and Reno have played 18 total games against each other this season and have split the season series, winning nine games apiece. In their last series during the final week of July, the Bees won four out of six games in Reno, handing the Aces their only series loss since June 14-19. Jake Gatewood hit four home runs in the series with 10 RBI and 19 total bases.
The Bees and the Aces will open their six-game slate tonight at 7:35 p.m. Mountain time (6:35 p.m. local time).
