Salmon Kings Nip Wranglers 5-3

Victoria, BC - The Las Vegas Wranglers (35-11-10, 80 points) were defeated by the Victoria Salmon Kings (34-16-5, 73 points) 5-3 at the Save On Foods Memorial Centre on Wednesday night. Salmon Kings forwards Kevin Estada and Chris St. Jacque each scored twice as Victoria capped a two-goal comeback. Las Vegas forwards Aki Seitsonen, Brandon Kaleniecki and Chris Ferraro each scored in the defeat. Goalie Kevin Lalande stopped 29 of 33 in the defeat. The Wranglers are now winless in the last four games (0-1-3). Victoria goalie Billy Thompson stopped 33 of 36 Las Vegas shots in the victory.Las Vegas will remain in Victoria for games on Friday and Saturday at 7:00 pm.

The Wranglers registered three goals in the opening period starting with Aki Seitsonen's ninth goal of the season just 3:26 into the game. Chris Ferraro and Aaron Power assisted on the team's first tally of the night. Victoria countered to tie the game at one with a power-play goal by Kiel McLeod at 10:39. Las Vegas reclaimed the lead when Brandon Kaleniecki finished off a crisp passing play by Bruce Mulherin and Kelly Czuy. Kaleniecki's 14th of the season came at 13:05 and gave the Wranglers a 2-1 lead. Chris Ferraro extended the Las Vegas lead to 3-1 with his 11th goal of the season at 17:09. Mulherin and Peter Ferarro helped set up the two-goal lead.

The Salmon Kings closed the gap in the middle period with a pair of goals. Kevin Estrada scored his 16th goal of the season at 7:57, trimming the Las Vegas lead to 3-2. Estrada played the puck from the corner as Wranglers goalie Kevin Lalande moved back into the crease. The puck went off Lalande's skate and into the back of the net. Kevin St. Jacques tied the game 3-3 after a nice play by left wing Daryl Lloyd. The Victoria forward checked Wranglers center Chris Ferraro on the Las Vegas end boards, then passed to the front of the net for a wide open St. Jacques, who scored his seventh goal of the season at 9:40.

In the third period, the Salmon Kings took a 4-3 lead after Lloyd picked off a clearing pass and played it to the Las Vegas net. St, Jacques picked up the loose puck at 5:16 of the period and lifted a backhand shot past Kevin Lalande for the Victoria lead. The Salmon Kings added an empty-net goal by Kevin Estrada with 46-seconds left for the 5-3 final.

The Wranglers continue their longest road trip of the season and remain Victoria games on Friday and Saturday at 7:00 pm. Las Vegas will return home on Tuesday, March 4th at 9:05 pm to host Stockton.
