Record-Breaking Desharnais Leads Record-Setting Cyclones Into California

PRINCETON, N.J. - Cincinnati and its ECHL record 15-game winning streak begin a four-game road trip through California on Thursday at Stockton. They visit Fresno on Friday and return to Stockton on Saturday before traveling to Bakersfield on Monday.

Leading the Cyclones during the streak is rookie David Desharnais, who has had an assist in an ECHL record 18 straight games.

Cincinnati has won its last five road games, one game shy of the team record set Dec. 15-Jan. 12, 2003, and its last 11 home games, breaking the eight wins set Dec. 22, 1996-Jan. 14, 1997.

The Cyclones broke the record of 14 consecutive wins set by Knoxville from Dec. 28, 1993-Jan. 29, 1994 and tied by Louisiana from Nov. 23-Dec. 22, 2001. Desharnais broke the record of 17 consecutive games with an assist set by Peter Kasowski of Roanoke Valley from Oct. 26-Dec. 7, 1991 (28 assists).

Cincinnati leads the ECHL with a team record 22 home wins while their 40 wins tie them for the league lead with Texas. Their 212 goals and 4.16 goals per game lead the league while they have allowed a league-low 116 goals and lead the ECHL in goals-against average with 2.27.

The rookie, who is under contract to Hamilton of the American Hockey League, has two assists in each of his last three games and 28 assists during the streak. The streak began on Jan. 5 with two assists against Reading, the first of seven two-assist games.

Desharnais has a 20-game point streak (3g-30a) that began with two assists on Dec. 31 at Trenton. The ECHL point streak record is 38 games by Trevor Jobe, who scored 112 points from Dec. 19, 1992-Mar. 14, 1993.

He leads ECHL rookies with 52 assists, 26 power-play assists and 66 points in 47 games while ranking second among all players in assists, power-play assists and points. He scored a career-high three goals and four points on Dec. 27 at Wheeling and had a career-high three assists on Nov. 23 against Dayton and Feb. 1 at Wheeling.

The American Hockey League record for consecutive games with an assist is 17 games set by Shaun Van Allen of Cape Breton, who had 35 assists from Oct. 11-Nov. 23, 1992 and tied by Peter White of Cape Breton, who had 25 assists from Oct. 19, 1993-Mar. 13, 1994. The National Hockey League record for consecutive games with an assist is 23 games by Wayne Gretzky of Edmonton, who had 48 assists during the streak in 1990-91.

ECHL
Celebrating its 20th Anniversary in 2007-08, the ECHL is the Premier 'AA' Hockey League and the third-longest tenured professional hockey league behind only the National Hockey League and the American Hockey League.

ECHL began in 1988-89 with five teams in four states and has grown to be a coast-to-coast league with 25 teams playing 900 games in 17 states and British Columbia in 2007-08.

The league officially changed its name to ECHL on May 19, 2003.

The ECHL has affiliations with 26 of the 30 teams in the NHL in 2007-08, marking the 11th consecutive season that the league has had affiliations with at least 20 teams in the NHL.

There have been 350 former ECHL players who have gone on to play in the NHL after playing in the ECHL, including 94 in the last three seasons. There have been 205 former ECHL players who have played their first game in the NHL in the past seven seasons.

There are 15 coaches in the NHL who have ECHL experience including former Wheeling coach Peter Laviolette, who is head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes, and former Mississippi coach Bruce Boudreau, who is head coach of the Washington Capitals.

The ECHL is represented for the seventh consecutive year on the National Hockey League championship team in 2007 with Anaheim assistant coach Dave Farrish, players Francois Beauchemin and George Parros and broadcasters John Ahlers and Steve Carroll.

The ECHL has affiliations with 26 of the 29 teams in the American Hockey League in 2007-08 and for the past 18 years there has been an ECHL player on the Calder Cup champion.

In each of the last two seasons there have been more than 225 players who have played in both the ECHL and the AHL and there were over 800 call-ups involving more than 500 players. In the last five seasons the ECHL has had more call-ups to the AHL than all other professional leagues combined with over 2,000 call-ups involving more than 1,000 players since 2002-03.
