Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks and Manitoba Moose, are pleased to announce that Mark Morrison will return for his third season with the club and his second stint as Head Coach. Morrison has agreed to a new two-year contract.

"Mark did an outstanding job taking on the head coaching duties half way through the season," said Dan Belisle, Vice President of Hockey Operations and General Manager. "I am looking forward to seeing how well the team can do given a full season of Mark's coaching."

After one and a half seasons as Assistant Coach, Morrison took over as bench boss on December 28th, 2006. In his first week he guided the Salmon Kings to a series win versus the Kelly Cup defending champion Alaska Aces. In 45 games as head coach, Morrison led the Salmon Kings to a 27-15-3 record and their first ever ECHL Kelly Cup playoff appearance. His winning percentage of .682 is the best all-time among Salmon Kings coaches.

"I am happy to return with the Salmon Kings and build on the successes of this past season," said Morrison. "It is the goal of this organization to compete at the highest levels in the league, and I wanted to be a part of that."

Under his tutelage, Victoria averaged a club record 3.44 goals per game and 3.00 goals against per game, and finished the regular season on a nine-game win streak. The club set new team records for the most wins (home and away); fewest losses (home and away); and the most points in a single season (76).

Morrison joined the Salmon Kings after 12 years as the Head Coach and General Manager of the British National League, Fife Flyers, where he was responsible for player signings, player contract negotiations and scouting. He is a three time recipient of the BNL's Player of the Year and Coach of the Year Awards. He started his playing career with the WHL Victoria Cougars. Alongside NHL stars Grant Fuhr, Paul Cyr and Russ and Geoff Courtnall, he amassed a point total record of 394 points in 191 games. This record not only stands today but led Morrison to be drafted 51st overall by the NHL's New York Rangers.
