Frederick Keys News Release
The Keys five-game winning streak came to a close on Wednesday night as the Salem Red Sox defeated Frederick, 2-1. On the evening, the Keys left nine runners on base, five through the first two innings. Ryohei Tanaka allowed one run in seven innings of work and matched a season-high with seven strikeouts. C Brian Ward drove in the Frederick's lone run on the night.
Facing LHP Chris Hernandez, the first three Keys that came to plate in the bottom of the first, all reached base. RF Steve Bumbry led off with a single, 2B Jonathan Schoop followed with a walk, and SS Manny Machado moved them up a base with a single to left. With the bases full, Hernandez buckled down. He struck out 1B Michael Flacco, forced CF Miguel Abreu to pop out to first, and then 3B Dale Mollenhauer grounded out to second end the frame.
Hernandez pitched out of another jam in the second. After retiring the first two batters of the inning, DH Justin Dalles singled to left and RF Steve Bumbry walked. Hernandez, however, got out of the inning unscathed after he struck out Jonathan Schoop to end the threat.
The contest remained scoreless entering the bottom of the fourth. 3B Dale Mollenhauer singled to right field to lead off the inning and then advanced to second on a fielding error by RF Bryce Brentz. Brian Ward brought Mollenhauer home when he laced a pitch down the right field line for a double.
Salem tied the game in the bottom of sixth on RBI double by CF Peter Hissey.
Wednesday's game remained tied entering the ninth inning. With one out in the top of the ninth, 3B Kolbrin Vitek doubled off RHP Ryan O'Shea. After a Bryce Brentz groundout advanced Vitek to third, C Dan Butler put the Sox in front for the first time on the night with a single through the right side of the infield.
The one-run Salem lead held up as Kendall Volz retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth.
RHP Jeremiah Bayer improved to 6-2 out of the Red Sox bullpen after he tossed 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. Volz picked up his second save and Ryan O'Shea got the loss as he fell to 3-5 on the year.
Frederick and Salem will play their final regular season matchup in 2011 on Thursday afternoon. The Keys will send LHP Nick Haughian (8-4, 3.40) to the hill while the Red Sox will counter with RHP Ryan Pressly (6-9, 4.50). First pitch of the series finale is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Harry Grove Stadium.
