Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
Game One: RHP Zeke Spruill (7-8, 3.06) at RHP Justin Grimm (2-2, 3.88)
Game Two: LHP Blaine Sims (3-3, 3.50) at LHP Chad Bell (1-0, 3.35)
ABOUT LAST NIGHT...: The Pelicans and Hillcats were rained out on Tuesday night at BB&T Coastal Field, setting up a Wednesday twinbill tonight. This will be the Birds' fifth doubleheader of the season, their third at home. The first two in Myrtle Beach, April 27 against Potomac and May 11 against Kinston, were also on Wednesdays after a Tuesday postponement. The Pelicans swept Kinston on May 11 and the other three double-dips were all splits. This will be Lynchburg's sixth doubleheader, all but one coming on the road. The Hillcats swept their first three twinbills, including ones on back-to-back days in Potomac, but they split their next one and were swept in their last one, on July 8 in Kinston.
A GOOD CENTURY: The Pelicans played their 100th game on Monday and sit at 55-45. They were 40-60 in both 2009 and 2010. Their only better mark since 2005 was in 2008, when the Birds started 64-36 en route to an 89-51 record.
WHERE ARE THE BATS': Over the weekend, the Pelicans scored just one run and notched only ten hits in being swept in three games by the Frederick Keys. The misery at the plate continued in the homestand opener on Monday against Lynchburg. During their four-game losing skid, the Birds have hit .112 as a team (13-116).
OUCH!: Jared Prince was plunked by a pitch once again on Monday. The leadoff HBP in the ninth against Lynchburg closer Ryan Buchter was his 21st of the season and now the Carolina League all-time record is reasonably in his sights. Seth Loman of Winston-Salem was hit 30 times last season and Prince is on pace for 29. Jared has been hit ten times in his last 26 games, and 15 times in his last 36, so the pace is picking up. With 39 games to play, the milestone watch is getting started.
