Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - A night after their offense slogged through a quick 8-1 loss, the Salem Red Sox turned the tables on the Pelicans.

In game two of their four-game series, Salem shut out Myrtle Beach 9-0 and scored in five separate innings in front of 4,415 fans at BB&T Coastal Field.

Salem sent just two over the minimum to the plate in Thursday night's series opener but didn't wait long to start their offensive onslaught on Friday, scoring a run in the second and one in the third. As Red Sox starter Bryan Price settled into his best outing of the year, his offense backed him throughout. Salem broke out in the fifth inning when David Mailman followed a one-out walk by Luis Exposito with his first homer of the season. With two outs in the same inning, Kris Negron singled, went to third on a Che-Hsuan Lin single and scored on an error charged to Pelicans left fielder Cody Johnson to make the margin 5-0.

Against Price (1-3) in their first game without recently-promoted sluggers Jason Heyward and Freddie Freeman, the Pelicans were unable to get anything going. Myrtle Beach sent just four over the minimum to the plate on the night, touching the right-hander for just three hits and totaling just five on the night. No Red Sox pitcher issued a walk as the Birds suffered their worst shutout loss of the year. The lone offensive player with multiple hits for the Pelicans was outfielder Luis Sumoza, who arrived from Rome prior to the game.

Myrtle Beach starter Erik Cordier struggled with command while lasting just four and a third innings. The right-hander walked six and allowed four runs on six hits. Cordier (3-3) was followed by five Pelicans relievers who surrendered six more runs on nine hits. The Myrtle Beach staff walked 11 against ten strikeouts on the night.

Salem tacked on four runs in the ninth, loading the bases with nobody out against Pelicans reliever Eric Barrett. A bases loaded walk and four singles in the inning sent Barrett to the showers and brought Michael Broadway from the Pelicans' pen to end the ninth with no further damage and the deficit at 10-0.

Saturday night, the Pelicans host the first home Fourth of July game in team history. Special fireworks displays are scheduled for tomorrow and Sunday nights with miniature American flags to be given away to the first 2,000 fans in attendance on the Fourth. Tickets are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, by calling the Pelicans at (843) 918-6000 or by visiting the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
