Salem Red Sox News Release
The Salem Red Sox look to sweep the Pelicans in Myrtle Beach for the second time this season tonight at TicketReturn.com Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05.
O(t)tstanding: Matty Ott came in to a bases loaded jam last night with the Pelicans up by two and threatening in the sixth. But Ott got Jorge Alfaro, previously 3-3 in the game, to ground out to escape the jam. That momentum propelled the Sox to strike for three in the sev- enth, eventually winning 5-3. The victory gave Salem its first three game win streak since the last three days of June, a three game sweep over the Blue Rocks at LewisGale Field. It was just the fifth time this year that Salem won in the 46 games that it trailed after six innings this season.
You Can Count on Kraus: Kyle Kraus is set to make his second spot of the season for Salem tonight. The right hander slides in after Jus- tin Haley's promotion to Portland and Corey Littrell departure in the trade deadline deal to St. Louis left holes in the Sox rotation. Kraus is coming off his most dominant month of the season. In six appear- ances in July, Kraus surrendered a lone earned run, posting 0.61 ERA (1 ER/14.2 IP). Kyle struck out ten and walked only three in the month. On the season, Kraus has walked only 12 hitters compared to 45 strikeouts in 63.1 IP. Kraus's only other start this year came against Myrtle Beach. The right hander allowed five runs on eight hits in five innings back on April 14th.
Matty J: Sox OF Matty Johnson continued his hot stretch with three hits last night. Matty has hit in six straight games, with a .500 aver- age (12/24) over that span. Johnson has driven in seven runs, and scored seven in the last six contests. This came on the heels of an excellent month of July, in which Johnson finished with a .323 aver- age (30/93), and a .447 on base percentage. Johnson scored 26 runs, walked 19 times, and drove in 16 runs in July. He now leads the Sox with 31 multi-hit games.
July Check: The Salem Red Sox posted both their highest team bat- ting average and lowest staff ERA of any month this season during July. However the Sox finished the month 11-16, their worst record of any month. The ERA and average were both second best in the Caro- lina league in the month, but the Sox finished a game behind Lynch- burg for the league's worst record in July. Despite finishing the month five games under .500, Salem outscored its opponents 115- 111 in July. Nine of Salem's 16 July losses were by two runs or less.
Notable Nuggets: The Salem Sox are just 7-21 against Potomac and Frederick this season, while they are 45-36 against the rest of the Carolina League. In the second half of the season, Salem is 2-13 against the Keys and P-Nats, and 17-9 against everyone else.
The Sox eight and nine hole hitters were 3/8, scoring last night, con- tinuing the recent production from that spot. Over the last four games, Salem's eight and nine hitters are 13/31 (.419) with eight runs scored and 6 RBIs.
Salem's bullpen has allowed just two earned runs over the last three games, in 13.2 IP (1.35 ERA).
