Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
EVERETT, Washington - After getting swept by the Eugene Emeralds in the last series, the Volcanoes looked to bounce back and curb their four-game losing streak in Everett. Salem-Keizer was unable to do so, however, losing 7-2 to the Everett AquaSox on Friday night.
Right from the beginning, Everett jumped out to an early lead, much like the Emeralds did in the most recent three-game series. The AquaSox scored two runs in the first inning to set the tone for the game.
Volcanoes left fielder Gio Brusa hit a leadoff home run in the second inning to dead center to cut the lead in half. Brusa's home run was the only hit for the Volcanoes until designated hitter Gustavo Cabrera led off the sixth inning with a double.
The AquaSox scored a run in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to take a 7-1 lead in the sixth inning. Salem-Keizer starting pitcher Melvin Adon lasted 5.2 innings, giving up nine hits and seven runs, while striking out five Everett batters.
Everett starter Ljay Newsome lasted 6.2 innings and gave up just one run, the home run to Brusa, on two hits, while striking out six Volcanoes. Newsome left to a standing ovation from the home crowd.
Salem-Keizer tried to mount a comeback in the top of the ninth. With the bases loaded and one out, first baseman Ryan Kirby grounded into a fielder's choice allowing second baseman Kevin Rivera to score. The comeback came up short as the Volcanoes fell 7-2 to the AquaSox.
The Volcanoes will be back in action on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. against the AquaSox at Everett Memorial Stadium. Matt Krook will climb the hill for the Volcanoes in game two of the five-game series against Everett as Salem-Keizer looks to snap a five-game skid.
