June 9, 2016 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Holly Springs Salamanders News Release

GAME ONE

The Salamanders (2-5) dropped game one of last night's double header with the Edenton Steamers (4-2) 9-3 in a game that was rained out on June 4th. The game picked back up in the top of the third inning with the Salamanders trailing 4-0.

A couple of two run home runs in the bottom of the second inning gave the Steamers this advantage. The Salamanders struck back in the top of the 3rd with a Danny Sheehan two run homer but were only able to scratch one more run throughout the game. A four run bottom of the fourth extended the Steamers lead to 8-2 and they never looked back. A solo shot in the bottom of the 8th made it 9-2 and a sac fly from Ben Calvano scored Brandon Riley in the Salamanders last efforts in the top of the 9th.

The winning pitcher for the Steamers was Andrew Hinkley, he was relieved by Trevor Houck. Matt Frisbee took the loss for the Salamanders, giving up 4 runs on 4 hits while collecting one strike out. Alex Pantuso, Kyle Stats, and Drew Scott all appeared for the Salamanders and combined to give up 5 runs towards the decision.

GAME TWO

The Salamanders (3-5) secured their third win of the season against the Edenton Steamers (4-3) in the second game of their doubleheader.

Andrew Papp got the ball for the Salamanders in the second game and surrendered three runs on four hits in five and a third innings while only throwing 59 pitches. Chad Sykes came in to get the save as he closed out a 4-3 victory for the Salamanders.

The Salamanders offense got off to a good start with Brandon Riley hitting a leadoff homerun in the bottom half of the first.

The Steamers did not take long to respond when Trey Hair put a solo homerun of his own over the left field wall to tie the game at 1 run a piece.

The Salamanders found life again in the bottom of the fifth when Chris Clare and Cody Roberts came through with back to back hits to start the inning. Conlin Hughes then put down a SAC bunt to move Clare and Roberts to second and third. Jon Rosoff then stepped to the plate and plated Clare and Roberts with a line drive double into the left center gap. Riley then followed with a single up the middle to score Rosoff from second pushing the lead to 4-1.

The Steamers didn't go quietly though as they struck back for two more runs in the top of the sixth making the score 4-3. A two out single, double, and walk sparked what was a chance to tie the score at four but closing pitching by Chad Sykes ended the rally securing the win for the Salamanders.

The Salamanders will play again at home on 6/10 against the Asheboro Copperheads under the lights at 7pm.
