Peninsula Pilots News Release
HAMPTON, Va. - During College Night and the first Thirsty Thursday of the season, the Peninsula Pilots used a big second inning aided by some clutch hitting to oust the Petersburg Generals in a 10-5 victory on Thursday night at War Memorial Stadium.
Joe Poduslenko (Seton Hall) headlined the night with a 2-for-4 night including a solo home run to lead four other Pilots with multi-hit games.
Petersburg started off the scoring with a five-run second inning. With the bases loaded, Christopher Hicks (Winthrop) hit an RBI single that plated Cody Davenport (Central Arkansas). In the very next at bat, Sammy Miller (Longwood) scored William Hancock (Central Arkansas) and Hicks on a two-run single. Two batters later, Adam Bauer (Murray State) scored Miller and Jake Rolly (Belmont Abbey), who reached on an error to take a 5-0 lead in the second inning.
Much to the Generals' dismay, the Pilots added some fireworks of their own in the bottom half of the inning. An RBI single from Cole Austin (West Virginia) plated Poduslenko to score the first run of the night. Nick Walker (Old Dominion) followed suit by batting in Logan Augustine (Lincoln Memorial) on a broken bat single. Austin scored on a double play ball to score the Pilots' third run of the inning. Then, in a remarkable display of athleticism and strategy, Josh Close, who reached on a walk and advanced to third after Walker's single, stole home to score the Pilots' fourth run of the inning. Kurt Sinnen (Old Dominion) plated Darian Carpenter (Virginia Commonwealth) and Andrew Yacyk (Liberty) on a two-out, two-run double after singles from each baserunner to cap the scoring.
The Pilots added to their run total in the third inning. After walks from Close and Walker, Shepherd scored both on a two-run single to take an 8-5 lead after three innings of play.
In the very next inning, Austin scored Augustine, who scored on a single, with a double, stretching the lead to 9-5.
Poduslenko added to the lead in the 6th inning with a solo home run, his first of the season, to left field, tacking on the final run of the game for a 10-5 final score.
After the Generals scored five runs in the second inning, a strong committee of pitchers held the Generals scoreless for the duration of the game. Chris Gau (Jacksonville) got the start for the Pilots and threw 3 1/3 innings and gave up five runs (three earned) while striking out four. The combination of Alex Shauger (Chipola) and Alex Mauricio (Norfolk State) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings before Welby Malczewski (Auburn) tossed two scoreless innings. Tim Edwards (Seton Hall) and Chase Randolph (Lincoln Memorial) each pitched a scoreless inning to close out the game.
The Pilots host two more games this weekend, beginning with Edenton on Friday night for Hawaiian Night and the first post game fireworks display of the year.
