Wilmington Sharks News Release

In a long, back and fourth contest, the Holly Springs Salamanders (7-13) edged out the Wilmington Sharks (11-9) with a go ahead single in the ninth to win 5-4.

With two on in the top of the ninth inning, the Salamanders and Sharks were tied at four. Devin Ruiz (UNC Greensboro) drove home the go ahead run with an RBI single. The Sharks had a chance in the bottom of the inning, but it quickly ended on a double play.

The Sharks had two separate two run leads in this game. The first came after scoring a run in each of the first two innings. Madison Stokes (South Carolina) hit a sacrifice fly in the first and Ward Coleman (Davidson) hit a RBI single in the second. The Salamanders tied the game in the top of third.

Wilmington added two more in the fourth, when Chris Graham (UNC Greensboro) and Clark Scolamiero (South Carolina) hustled out infield grounders out to bring two runs home. That lead held through the seventh, when a RBI double tied the game at four.

The win went to Jeff Gottesman (1-2). He pitched two scoreless innings with two hits, no walks and struck out three. Steven Powels (0-1) took the loss, pitching three innings, allowing one run on three hits, and striking out two. Chad Sykes (2) got a save with one inning, one hit, and no runs.

The Sharks will travel to Holly Springs on Friday, before returning home on Saturday to face Gastonia, when it will be Miracle League Night at the Shark Tank.
