Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, IA- On Vegas Night presented by the Mystique Casino and media partner WJOD, the Fighting Saints hit the jackpot, scoring three times in the second period en route to a 6-1 win over Cedar Rapids Friday night in front of 2,859 at the Mystique Community Ice Center. Max McHugh notched a goal and an assist in the victory, as the Fighting Saints moved six points ahead of Cedar Rapids in the Eastern Conference standings, and claimed their first win over the RoughRiders this season.
McHugh didn't open the scoring Friday night, but he did all the work to help setup Jarrid Privitera for the first goal of the game for Dubuque. The veteran forward charged down the left wing boards, eluding a check from a Cedar Rapids defender and skating in on goal. McHugh walked in on Cedar Rapids goalie Danny Tirone, but the puck bounced loose on the right wing to Privitera who flipped it home to make it 1-0 at 7:42.
Cedar Rapids responded at 15:54 on a goal by Mitch Maloney who punched a rebound past Dubuque goaltender Ben Johansson. The Fighting Saints would respond with a goal at 18:13 of the first period by Seamus Malone. With Dubuque on a powerplay, Malone walked off the half-boards on the left wing and cut in on goal. He let a shot go that rolled through Tirone's legs and sat in the crease. Malone reached his stick in over the pile and tapped the loose puck into the net to make it 2-1 Dubuque at 18:13.
Period two saw Dubuque take the game over. Robby Darrar continued his hot hand, scoring his 8th goal of the season 4:19 of the middle frame. Darrar flew down the left wing, snapping a wrist shot that fooled Tirone, and darted past the Cedar Rapid's goaltender in the blocker side. The puck rattled off the goal post and in to make it 3-1 Dubuque.
The Fighting Saints added to its lead with a pair of quick strikes. This time McHugh was credited with the goal. The Fighting Saints sustained offensive pressure for nearly a minute before Shane Eiserman setup McHugh for the tally at 6:44 to make it 4-1. Just 17 seconds later, Dubuque struck again. Before McHugh's goal could be announced, Jason Ford got a piece of a shot from younger brother Keegan to make it 5-1. The Fighting Saints tenacious attack didn't stop after the McHugh tally, and Dubuque's puck movement got Tirone scrambling. The younger Ford waited at the point, and wristed a shot from the blueline that caught Tirone out of position, and older brother finished for the goal at 7:01.
The Fighting Saints would add one last exclamation point in the third period. Jordan Klimek tallied his first USHL goal at 14:10 of the game's final period. Klimek let a wrist shot go from the right point the ducked underneath goaltender Chris Birdsall, who replaced Tirone, and found its way into the net with Jacob Benson causing a screen. Klimek also added an assist on the night.
Dubuque outshot the RoughRiders 28-20 on the evening and moved to 22-10-1 on the season, and improved to 3-3-0 in Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup play. Johansson stopped 19 shots in net to improve to 4-0-0 on the season.
Tomorrow night the Fighting Saints visit Omaha for a 7:35 p.m. game with the Lancers. Omaha has been at the top of the USHL's standings for the majority of the first half of the season and Saturday marks Dubuque's first matchup with the Lancers. The game can be heard on Dubuque's Super Hits 106.1 FM. The Fighting Saints return home for a pair of games on January 31 and February 1 versus the Youngstown Phantoms.
