Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (10-13) were bested 5-4 in a 13 inning marathon with the St. Paul Saints (12-12) on Sunday afternoon at Sioux Falls Stadium. The Canaries trailed into the bottom of the ninth, until Tim Hutting's two-out home run forced extra innings. While the Canaries had a runner in scoring position in each the 10th, 11th, and 12th innings, it would be the Saints that scored the winner in the 13th.
The Canaries took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Grant Richardson singled and advanced to second on a ground-out by Josh Patton. After Will Smith was intentionally walked with two outs, Ben Van Iderstine singled into right field. Richardson scored from second base to give the Canaries a 1-0 lead. The run by Richardson was his league-leading 63rd of the season, tied for the seventh most runs in a season by a Canaries player.
The Birds extended their lead thanks to a Saints error in the fourth inning. Van Iderstine reached on his second single of the day and stole second base to get in scoring position. Paul Smyth hit a two-out groundball to the shortstop that was misplayed by Ryan Priddy. With runners on the corners, Tim Hutting singled to score Van Iderstine and the Canaries were ahead by a pair, 2-0.
St. Paul rallied to go in front in the sixth inning. Pichi Balet was hit by a pitch and Tim Brown singled to put two men on base. Brent Krause singled to score Balet and put St. Paul on the scoreboard, 2-1. An out later, Heath Keel singled to advance Krause to third and score Brown, tying the game, 2-2. Zach Goldberg followed with a groundout to the third baseman that allowed Krause to score. After five and a half innings, the Saints had their first lead of the game, 3-2.
The Saints added one more run in the top of the ninth inning. Ryan Priddy doubled and scored on a single by Tony Mansolino. Mansolino's RBI single put St. Paul ahead by a pair, 4-2.
The Canaries tied the game in the bottom of the ninth inning. Van Iderstine started the inning with a single, and two strikeouts later Tim Hutting hit his fifth home run of the season. Hutting's blast tied the game, 4-4, and forced it into extra innings.
The game remained tied until St. Paul pushed across the winning run in the 13th inning. Ben Thomas singled and advanced to third on a single by Kevin Sullivan. A sacrifice fly by Priddy plated Thomas for the game winning run, and the Saints prevailed 5-4.
John Wesley (2-0) pitched the final three innings for St. Paul to get the win. Lenny Bays (3-4) suffered the loss for the Canaries.
The Canaries and Saints continue their three-game series at 7:05 p.m. on Monday night. Monday's promotion will feature "South Dakota's Funniest Home Videos."
