St. Paul Saints News Release

SIOUX FALLS, SD - The St. Paul Saints trailed by five going into the eighth inning and their offense hadn't done much all day. It turned around with two big swings of the bat as they tied the game up, but in the bottom of the eighth inning all the good fortune was gone. The Saints lost 10-7 to the Sioux Falls Canaries on Wednesday afternoon at Sioux Falls Stadium. The loss drops the Saints to 42-34 on the season.

With the Saints trailing 7-2 in the top of the eighth Kyle Barrett reached on a one out double. Burt Reynolds' infield single to short put runners at first and second. The Canaries brought in relief pitcher Dmitri Kourtis and Brady Shoemaker greeted him with a three-run blast to left, his seventh of the season that extended his hit streak to 12, to cut the deficit to 7-5. With two outs Dante Bichette Jr. reached on an infield single to third and Nathaniel Maggio extended his hitting streak to 10-games with a two-run homer off the left field pole, his fifth of the season, third with the Saints and second in as many games, to tie the game at seven.

In the bottom of the inning, however, the Canaries got to Saints reliever Ken Frosch. He hit leadoff man Maxx Garrett. Mitch Glasser doubled down the third base line putting runners at second and third. A wild pitch scored Garrett to make it 8-7. Jordan Smith's sacrifice fly made it 9-7. With two outs Jordan Dean slugged a solo homer to left, his fourth of the season that put the game away.

The Saints jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first off of former Saints pitcher Jake Esch. Max Murphy led off the game with a walk. Barrett singled him to third. Barrett stole second and a wild pitch scored Murphy making it 1-0. Shoemaker's sacrifice fly made it 2-0.

With the Saints up 2-1 in the fifth the Canaries put up five runs on Matt Solter. Glasser reached on an infield single to third and Smith doubled him to third. Jeff Malm made it 3-2 with a two-run single to right. Dean walked and, with one out, Chris Grayson made it 4-2 with a single to center. Beck Wheeler took over and gave up a two-run double to Henry making it 6-2.

The Canaries tacked on an insurance run in the seventh off of Zack Jones when Grayson was hit by a pitch. He stole second and went to third on the throwing error by catcher Aaron Gretz. With two outs Mike Hart knocked home Grayson to make it 7-2.

The Saints return home for a 10-game homestand and it begins with a four-game series on Thursday night against the first place Gary SouthShore Railcats at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Eddie Medina (6-4, 2.70) to the mound against Railcats RHP Keaton Steele (4-2, 2.06). We celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Bull Durham. The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network, cable access channels in and around the Twin Cities, and heard on Alt 93.3 FM.
