St. Paul Saints News Release
The Saint Paul Saints found themselves on the losing end of the worst defeat in the history of the franchise, as they fell to the St. Joe Blacksnakes on Tuesday night at Midway Stadium by a final of 17-1.
After a scoreless first inning, St. Joe got on the board first, with four runs in the top of the second off three hits, two walks, including one with the bases loaded, and a hit batsman off of Adam Brandenberg to give St. Joe a 4-0 early lead.
St. Paul would score their only run of the ballgame in the bottom of the third. After reaching first on a fielder's choice, Adam Bourassa would advance to third base on an throwing error by St. Joe shortstop Casey Gordan, and would score on a Marcel Longmire single to right field to cut the St. Paul deficit to 4-1.
This would be as close as the Saints would get on this night, however, as St. Joe would score a run on back-to-back doubles by Terry Robles, Jr. and Casey Gordan for a 5-1 Blacksnakes lead.
The game would be put out of reach in the top of the fifth inning, when the Blacksnakes batted 11 men, scoring eight runs on seven hits. The final three runs of the inning would come on Dustin Yount's three run home run, giving the Blacksnakes a 13-1 lead.
The Blacksnakes would open up a record-setting lead in the top of the seventh inning, scoring four more runs on five hits, including a bases-clearing double by Carter McQuigg, giving the Snakes the eventual final score of 17-1.
Adam Brandenberg (6-3) took the loss, going 4 1/3 innings, giving up eight runs on 10 hits. Alec Sheppard (5-1) picked up the win, pitching six innings, giving up one run on seven hits, and is now 3-0 vs. the St. Paul Saints this season. Chris Marchildon pitched the final three innings for the Blacksnakes to earn his first save of the season.
The 16-run loss is the worst margin of defeat in the history of the St. Paul Saints. The previous margin was 15 runs, accomplished twice in the 2001 season vs. the Sioux City Explorers and Winnipeg Goldeyes while as a member of the Northern League.
The Saints will continue their three game series vs. the Blacksnakes on Wednesday, August 1, in a 1:05 matinee. Right-hander Charlie Ruud (8-3, 3.93 ERA) will take the mound for the Saints, facing right-hander Greg Bicknell (2-2, 5.00 ERA). Tomorrow's game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network, or heard on the web at www.saintsbaseball.com.
