Saints Set Franchise Record for Runs in Season in 6-2 Victory

ST. PAUL, MN (September 1, 2015) - It wasn't the most high powered offensive display the St. Paul Saints have put on this season, but they took down another record on Tuesday night at CHS Field. With a 6-2 victory over the Gary SouthShore Railcats, in front of 7,539, the Saints surpassed the franchise record for runs in a season with 571, jumping over the 2007 team that scored 570. The Saints improved to 69-23 with six games left in the season.

The Saints looked like they were going to blow past the record in the first inning with their new look lineup. For the first time since the trade deadline the Saints had their two key acquisitions playing, Ryan Cavan and David Espinosa. In the first Alonzo Harris and Cavan reached on back-to-back walks. Vinny DiFazio made it 1-0 with an RBI single. Angelo Songco followed with a single to load the bases with nobody out. Railcats starter Travis McGee, however, struck out Ian Gac and Espinosa and got Willie Argo to ground into a fielder's choice to end the inning.

It stayed that way until the fourth when Argo walked with one out and Anthony Phillips walked with two outs. Harris drilled a three-run homer to left, his 14th of the season, to make it 4-0.

Reyes Dorado, making his second start for the Saints since signing as a free agent, pitched around minor jams in the first five innings. In the sixth, however, the walks finally caught up to him as he issued a free pass to Adam Taylor to start the inning. Dustin Geiger doubled to left scoring Taylor to make it 4-1. An infield single by Jaime Del Valle put runners at the corners with nobody out. Kevin Cravey was summoned from the bullpen and got a double play, as the run scored from the third, to make it 4-2. Cravey went 2.0 innings of shutout relief allowing two hits and walking one.

The Saints got two insurance runs in the eighth when they once again loaded the bases with nobody out. Gac singled and Espinosa doubled high off the wall in right to put runners at second and third. An intentional walk to Argo loaded the bases. Reliever John Kovalik got Nate Hanson to line out to third and struck out Anthony Phillips. Harris then hit a grounder to short that looked like it would end the inning, but Jarred Mederos threw the ball away at second allowing two runs to score.

The Saints got a perfect inning of relief from Mike Zouzalik and a hitless, scoreless inning from Ryan Rodebaugh.

The same two teams meet in game two of the four game series on Wednesday night at CHS Field at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Robert Coe (10-3, 2.99) to the mound against Railcats LHP Rene Solis (4-6, 4.77).
