Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
FARGO, ND - A night after being shutout, the Dubuque Fighting Saints came out flying and notched a season high eight goals, dominating the Fargo Force and earning an 8-1 win at the Scheels Arena Saturday Night. Three different Fighting Saints scored a goal in the win, and 11 different players had points.
Dubuque forward Jacob Benson made a triumphant return to his home state, and with a large cheering section in attendance, notched his second goal of the season to open the scoring. A night after being held off the scoreboard, the Fighting Saints jumped out to an early lead. Dubuque's Eric Robinson collected the puck behind the net and centered it to Jason Ford. However, the pass came to Benson, and the forward punched home a shot over Fargo goaltender Brendan Jensen to make it 1-0 at 4:31. Benson had over 30 family and friends in attendance, as well as the entire Red River High School hockey team.
Dubuque scored again at the 5:10 mark on a Seamus Malone goal. With a delayed penalty, Malone knocked in a pass from Brett Boeing on the right side doorstep. Karson Kuhlman also assisted on the goal. Fargo would cut Dubuque's lead to one at the 11:56 mark of the opening frame when Garick Gray scored through Dubuque netminder Hayden Stewart's five-hole from the slot.
In the second period, Dubuque took the game over. The Fighting Saints scored their first of four goals in the second period when Malone struck for his second goal of the game only 1:27 into the period. Malone tapped in a backdoor pass from Jarrid Privitera on the left side of the ice to make it 3-1.
A turning point in the game occurred two minutes later. Fargo's Alex Jackstadt was awarded a penalty shot with a chance to cut Dubuque's lead to 3-2. He came in on Dubuque's Stewart and deked the netminder out of position. Jackstadt looked to slide the puck into the open net, but somehow missed, shooting it through the crease. The red light started to flash at what looked like a sure goal, but the Fighting Saints caught a break, and the pendulum swung as the Fighting Saints put away the game by tallying three more second period goals.
Malone setup Kuhlman on a two-on-one for his third point of the game at 4:31 to make it 4-1. At 10:29, an up ice pass from Andrew Gaus sent Jensen flying out of his net, but Jarrid Privitera beat him to it, and slid the puck into the vacated net to make it 5-1 Dubuque. Shane Eiserman scored on a beautiful setup from Max McHugh on a three-on-two to finish off the second period with Dubuque in front 6-1.
The Fighting Saints added two more goals in a chippy third period. Jarrid Privitera scored his second of the game unassisted on the powerplay at 5:59. In the closing seconds, Benson gave his cheering section one last hurrah, scoring his second of the game on a beautiful setup from Eiserman. Benson unleashed a slapshot that rattled off the crossbar and in to make it 8-1 at 19:18.
Stewart was strong in goal for Dubuque, kicking aside 32 shots and earning his third straight win in goal. Dubuque outshot Fargo 38-33 and improved to 14-5-1 with the win.
