Indiana Ice News Release
What was a stagnant offense in the first period erupted for four unanswered goals as the Indiana Ice dominated the Chicago Steel 4-1 on Saturday from the Edge Ice Arena.
The victory vaulted Indy to a three-game win streak and an 8-1-1 record in their last ten games.
Jason Salvaggio (2G), Tyler Andrew (2A), Denis Smirnov (2A) and Joe Sullivan (2A) all registered two-point nights while Samu Perhonen returned from Injured Reserve to record the win with a 27-save effort.
The contest was almost a tale of two different teams between the first and second periods. An Ice offense that averages nearly 19 shots in the first period recorded only seven while allowing the Steel 13 scoring opportunities. The visitors reversed the tides after the first intermission, outshooting Chicago 34-15 in the final 40 minutes of play.
Indy was put back on their heels when the Steel's Robbie Payne put the hosts up 1-0 with a goal on the delayed penalty. Their revelry didn't last long as goals by Vince Pedrie and Salvaggio soon found the hosts heading into the locker room after the second period facing a 2-0 deficit.
With the Ice still reeling from an expired power play, Smirnov battled along the boards before feeding the puck back to Pedrie at the left point. The recent Quinnipiac University commit then ripped a slap shot that beat Steel netminder Cale Morris to knot the contest at 1-1.
Taking advantage of another power play opportunity late in the second period, Salvaggio notched the game-winner with his first of two goals on the evening. Andrew fought on the halfboards before feeding back to Sullivan in the trap. Salvaggio picked up the loose puck just outside the crease and fired to take the lead once and for all.
Already carrying the lead into the third period, Indy added insurance goals off the tape of Salvaggio and recent Cornell University-commit Dwyer Tschantz to seal the Ice's third consecutive win.
Indy returns home Sunday (12/1) for a special matinee showcase with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders from Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The puck is set to drop at 6:05 pm following the Indianapolis Colts game against the Tennessee Titans at Lucas Oil Stadium. Fans who show up to the Bankers Life Fieldhouse box office in their favorite Colts gear will receive half off a single-game ticket for Sunday's contest.
