St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (August 1, 2012) - With the St. Paul Saints having just four relievers in the bullpen they turned to a very familiar arm, right-hander Billy Spottiswood, re-signing the pitcher that began the season with the Saints.
The 27-year-old Spottiswood was 0-2 with a 5.55 ERA in 11 games with the Saints. In 24.1 innings pitched he walked six and struck out 18 while opponents hit .327 against him. The Saints released him on June 21 and was signed as a free agent by the Winnipeg Goldeyes on June 24. With the Goldeyes Spottiswood was 1-2 with an 8.68 ERA in 12 games. In 9.1 innings pitched he walked three and struck out eight while opponents hit .366 against him. He was released by the Goldeyes on July 23.
Spottiswood spent all of last season at Double-A Mobile and was tremendous. He went 5-3 with a 2.86 ERA and two saves in 51 relief appearances. In 72.1 innings he walked 20 and struck out 61.
Spottiswood was a 25th round selection by the Diamondbacks in the 2007 June Amateur Draft out of Chico State and spent that season in Yakima while recording a 2.49 ERA in 26 relief appearances. In 2008 he was dominant at Single-A South Bend recording 13 saves along with a 2.11 ERA. That earned him a promotion to High-A Visalia in 2009 and he impressed so much that he pitched 17 games at Triple-A Reno. He spent most of 2010 at Visalia and pitched two games in Reno.
Left-handed reliever Kyle Carr was released after experiencing an injury to his oblique and right-handed reliever Reid Mahon was also released. He was 0-2 with a 4.84 ERA while Mahon was 4-5 with a 5.76 ERA.
The Saints roster stands at the league maximum 22 players, 10 pitchers and 12 position players with one on the disabled list and two on the inactive list.
