Saints Lose Seventh Straight at Home, Blanked 4-0

ST. PAUL, MN - Mark Hamburger broke another franchise record on Saturday night at Midway Stadium, but the St. Paul Saints were bested 4-0 by the Sioux City Explorers in front of 4,099 onlookers. The Saints starting pitcher threw his franchise single-season best fifth complete game, but his opposition Richard Salazar was a little bit better, one-hitting the Saints offense through 7.0 innings. The loss was the seventh in a row at home, leaving the team one shy of the longest home losing streak in team history which is eight, set from August 9-20, 2007.

The Explorers struck first in a game that was played in rain from the fourth inning on, by plating single runs in both the third and fourth innings. Austin Gallagher and Anthony Kaskadden each tallied RBI singles off of Hamburger to put the Explorers on the board.

Salazar threw 5.1 no-hit innings before finally allowing a single to Trevor Hairgrove for the Saints first hit of the night. That was the lone hit Salazar gave up all night, as he departed after 7.0 innings having walked three and struck out seven.

Sioux City tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the eighth when Eliezer Mesa reached on a leadoff bunt single, moved to second on a Kaskadden walk, and came around to score on a base hit by Peter Barrows. The next batter, Luke Murton, followed with a run-scoring single of his own, but Barrows, also trying to score, was gunned down at home plate by leftfielder Donald Blunt holding the deficit at 4-0.

The Saints loaded the bases against Kyle Kingsley in the bottom of the eighth when the Explorers reliever walked three straight with one out. After some maintenance was done to the wet mound Kingsley rebounded to strike out the next two hitters and then worked a clean ninth inning to clinch the win.

Hamburger was the tough-luck loser once again, throwing all 9.0 innings and allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits while walking two and striking out five. In Hamburger's five complete games the Saints hold a 2-3 record.

In not scoring a run, the Saints were shutout for the 11th time this season. The 11 shutouts are the most in franchise history.

The same two teams meet Sunday night at 7:05 p.m. for game two of the series. The Saints send RHP Anthony Claggett (9-5, 3.25) to face Explorers RHP Cody Hall (1-1, 2.94). It is Fan Appreciation Night. The game can be heard on 1220 AM and in the ballpark at 87.9 FM.
