Saints Host Rival Waterloo for Olympic Night Saturday
February 6, 2014 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, IA- Ice Hockey gets underway Saturday at The Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, and across the globe in Dubuque, Iowa, the Dubuque Fighting Saints will be holding Olympic Night. While it's not quite Canada versus USA, the matchup between the Waterloo Black Hawks and Dubuque Fighting Saints looks to be golden. The Fighting Saints host their Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup rival at 7:05 p.m. Saturday night at the Mystique Community Ice Center in a battle of two of the USHL's best.
With the opening ceremonies Friday, and the games kicking into full gear this weekend, Saturday night's entertainment at the Mystique Community Ice Center will feature familiar scenes from the Olympic games. On the ice, fans will be treated to a game of "Human Curling," where four teams will battle to see who can take the gold medal. Other activities include a "Race for the Torch," where four contestants will represent four different countries and race around to the arena to be the first to the sacred torch.
There will also be trivia on Sochi, Russia, the location of the 2014 Winter Olympic games. Members of the press and fans can take a deep breath, as unlike Sochi, the bathrooms at the Mystique Community Ice Center are in tiptop shape, the water is safe to use, and the lobby of the arena is fully finished.
Saturday's game will also honor Dubuque's two former players participating in the Olympics. Forward Zemgus Girgensons and defenseman Arvids Rekis were once Dubuque Fighting Saints, and the two will play for Team Latvia. Girgensons called Dubuque home from 2010-2012, helping the Fighting Saints win the Clark Cup in 2011, and captaining the squad in 2011-2012. He is currently in his rookie season with the Buffalo Sabres where he has 5 goals and 12 assists. Rekis played for the original Dubuque Fighting Saints in 1995-1996 and begin his professional career in 2000. He has played overseas since 2003, and currently is a member of Riga Dynamo of the Kontinental Hockey League in Russia.
On the ice, Dubuque is the lone USHL team that has beaten Waterloo twice this season. The Black Hawks boast a league best 31-5-1 record, but the Fighting Saints have claimed victories over Waterloo on September 27 and December 7. Saturday's game pins two of the league's hottest teams against each other. Dubuque has won seven of its last eight games, and Waterloo has a league best 15 wins in a row.
The game is also a pivotal contest in Dubuque's quest to defend its back-to-back Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup titles. The Fighting Saints enter Saturday's game at 3-3-0 in play against their Eastern Iowa rivals Waterloo and Cedar Rapids. The Fighting Saints trail Waterloo by 5 points in the Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup standings, as the Black Hawks are 5-1-1.
Saturday's game will be televised on KCRG 9.2 and is the last time Waterloo visits Dubuque this season. Tickets are available to this key matchup by calling 563.583.6880 or by visiting DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
