St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN (July 10, 2009) - The St. Paul Saints were unable to start the second half of the season at home on the right foot as they were downed by the Sioux City Explorers 10-5 Friday night at Midway Stadium in front of a crowd of 5,493. Despite putting up five runs on the board in the fourth inning, the Saints offense was held in check by Explorers starter Ty Marotz.

Marotz retired 17 straight batters after Alex Fonseca's RBI single in the fourth. He pitched a complete game, going 9.0 strong innings, allowing five runs on six hits while walking four and striking out six. The Saints were trailing 2-0 in the fourth when Marotz walked the bases loaded. Jeff Eure, Scott Knazek and Fonseca all followed with RBI singles to give the Saints a 4-2 lead. After a Steve Butler sacrifice bunt, Anthony Norman drove home a run with a sacrifice fly. That put the Saints up 5-2 but they would get nothing more off Marotz.

The Explorers starter picked up only his third win of the year, despite pitching well all season long. Finally his club was able to provide with the support he'd been looking for. Even after a big fourth inning, the Saints could not hold the momentum for very long, with the Explorers plating three runs in their half of the fifth. Sioux City then broke the game open with a five run sixth off reliever Reed Dickert, who took the loss for the Saints.

James Boone, the Explorers left fielder had a big night at the plate. He collected three extra base hits including two doubles and a home run, his first long ball of the year. Nick McCoola added three hits of his own and scored twice for the victorious Explorers.

Charlie Ruud started for St. Paul and lasted just 5.0 innings, yielding five runs (four earned) on eight hits while walking one and striking out two. Ryan Ariail was a bright spot for the Saints pitching as the left handed reliever tossed 3.1 scoreless innings to end the ballgame.

The same two teams continue series tomorrow night back at Midway Stadium. The Saints will be giving away a waffle ball and bat to the first 2,500 fans! Saints send their ace RHP Brandon Kintzler (7-2, 2.36) to the mound against Explorers RHP Tyler Meigs (0-4, 3.63). You can watch the game live on KSTC-TV, Channel 45 and you can listen to the game live on Relevant Radio 1330.
