Sioux City Explorers News Release
St. Paul, MN.....Sioux City right hander Ty Marotz hurled a complete game as the Explorers defeated St. Paul 10-5 Friday and moved back into first place in the American Association North.
With the victory the Explorers are now 3-1 in the second half, one half game ahead of second place St. Paul in the North.
Marotz retired 17 of the last 18 batters he faced in picking up his third win of the season. The right hander survived a rocky fourth inning when he walked the first three batters and after the smoke had cleared St. Paul sent nine batters to the plate and scored five runs to take a 5-2 lead. However, after that Marotz dominated the game on the mound for the Explorers.
After St. Paul had taken a 5-2 lead in the fourth, the Explorers came back and tied the game at 5-5. In the sixth inning, the Explorers sent ten batters to the plate in scoring five runs to take a 10-5 lead, which would be the final score. A single by Dustin Jones drove in the go-ahead run and the X's would follow with four more tallies, including a bases load single by Luis Figueroa that scored two runs,
The Explorers gave Marotz plenty of offensive help with 15 hits with James Boone leading the way with three hits, two doubles and a home run. The home run by Boone came in the second inning to give the X's a 1-0 lead. Nick McCoola also had three hits while Dustin Jones, Alex Llanos, Luis Figueroa and Brett Mieras all had two hits each.
The second game of the three-game series will be Saturday starting at 7:05 at Midway Stadium in St. Paul.
