Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Lincoln, NE - Ben Moore pitched a complete game on Friday night, allowing three runs on just five hits, as the Sioux Falls Canaries (2-2) came away with a 6-3 win in the series opener against the Lincoln Saltdogs (1-3) at Haymarket Park.

The Birds took the lead in the top of the first inning. Jared Lemieux singled and Cody Haerther walked to put two men on base. With two outs, Trevor Lawhorn doubled to score Lemieux and Haerther for a 2-0 advantage. Patrick Reilly followed with his own two-out double, scoring Lawhorn, and giving the Canaries a 3-0 lead.

The Canaries doubled their lead in the second. Joe Anthonsen and Ken Lup started the inning with back-to-back singles. After Lemieux sacrificed the runners over, Tim Hutting hit his second home run of the season. The three-run shot put the Birds up by a score of 6-0.

Lincoln got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. Pichi Balet and Shawn McGill hit back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. McGill stole second as Steve Alexander struck out for the first out of the inning. After Brandon Jones popped out to the second baseman, Shea McFeeley came through with a two-out single to plate Balet and McGill, and cut the Canaries lead to four, 6-2.

In the fourth inning, the Saltdogs got another run. Balet opened the inning with a double. After a wild pitch advanced Balet to third, a groundout by McGill scored him. After four innings, the Canaries led, 6-3.

Moore (4-5) handled things the rest of the way, allowing just one of the last 13 Saltdogs that he faced to reach base. Moore issued just one walk in the complete game, while striking out seven. Jarrett Gardner (6-4) gave up six runs on eight hits in seven innings to suffer his second loss to the Birds this season.

Canaries All-Star Outfielder Cory Harris went 0-for-4 in the loss, ending his consecutive games on-base streak at 44 games, one shy of the American Association record.

The Canaries and Saltdogs will continue their three-game on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. The Birds return to Sioux Falls Stadium on Friday, July 17 for a series with the Sioux City Explorers. The series opener will be DAV Night featuring a Team Card Set Giveaway and Friday Night Fireworks presented by Sanford Health.
