St. Paul Saints News Release
GRAND PRAIRIE, TX - The St. Paul Saints had a chance to finish their nine-game roadtrip on an emphatic note, unfortunately it was a dud of an ending. They couldn't muster enough offense and fell to the Grand Prairie AirHogs 4-1 on Wednesday night at AirHogs Stadium. The loss dropped the Saints to 12-7 on the season.
The AirHogs, who came in as the worst offense in the league hitting .199 and averaging 2.4 runs per game, topped that in the first inning. With one out Javion Randle walked. He stole second and third and Luo Jinjun walked. Han Xiao's single to right scored Randle to make it 1-0. After Saints starter Ryan Zimmerman struck out Cao Jie, Yang Gin doubled home two to make it 3-0.
It stayed that way until the fourth when the Saints got their lone run of the night. With one out Burt Reynolds was hit by a pitch and stole second. Devon Rodriguez' infield single to second moved Reynolds to third. Jeremy Martinez, who collected three of the Saints seven hits, knocked home Reynolds with a single to left making it 3-1.
The AirHogs added to their lead in the fifth as Josh Prince doubled off of reliever Landon Beck. Prince then started to take off for third too early, Beck stepped off, and as Prince was going back to second Beck threw it to Blake Schmit covering the bag. The ball, however, was bounced into the turf and went into center field allowing Prince to take third. Jinjun's high chopper to short allowed Prince to score giving the AirHogs a three run lead.
The only other opportunity the Saints had to score came in the eighth. Schmit led off the inning by being hit by a pitch. He was thrown out trying to steal second. With two outs Reynolds singled to left and Rodriguez followed with a walk. A wild pitch moved both runners up into scoring position. The AirHogs went to their bullpen for Liu Guoqing who got Martinez to fly out to left to end the inning.
The Saints finished the nine-game roadtrip at 5-4.
The Saints have Thursday off and return to action on Friday night against the Milwaukee Milkmen in game one of a three game series at CHS Field at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Dustin Crenshaw (1-1, 4.84) to the mound and the Milkmen are TBA. It is a Peanuts Celebration presented by Valleyfair with Xcel Energy Friday Night Fireworks. The game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM and seen on the Saints Cable Network, cable access channels in and around the Twin Cities.
