CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa-With two critical points on the line Wednesday night, the Dubuque Fighting Saints delivered- and in comeback fashion. The Fighting Saints erased a two-goal deficit and scored the game's final three goals, including the winning tally from Jarrid Privitera, to earn a 4-3 comeback victory over the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. With the victory, Dubuque pulled three points ahead of the RoughRiders in the USHL's Eastern Conference Standings. The Fighting Saints currently sit in 2nd Place with 64 points through 50 games, while the 'Riders are in 3rd Place with 61 points through 51 games played.
The game opened with only one goal in the first period, coming from Cedar Rapids' Andrew Oglevie on a deflection. Alec Marsh fired a shot from the right side faceoff circle that hit Oglevie and deflected past Dubuque netminder Kevin Reich to make it 1-0 RoughRiders at 13:05.
In the second period, the game became somewhat of a track meet with multiple momentum swings and goals coming from both teams. The Fighting Saints would briefly pull the game to a tie on a goal by Shane Eiserman. A stretch pass pushed Eiserman up ice behind the Cedar Rapids defense. He made a great move and fired a shot that beat Cedar Rapids goaltender Danny Tirone five-hole to make it 1-1 at 11:14.
Cedar Rapids would retake the lead just over a minute later. Charlie Curti collected the puck on a mad scramble and snapped a shot towards Reich. Former Fighting Saint Andrew Gaus was parked in front of the goal and deflected the shot past Reich's glove to make it 2-1 Cedar Rapids at 12:30 of the period. Cedar Rapids would add to its lead on Kevin Shand's first goal of the season. He ripped a wrist shot past Reich's blocker to make it 3-1 RoughRiders at 16:19.
Dubuque added a critical marker late in the second period to pull within one and setup the comeback. Karson Kuhlman rushed up ice and split a pair of Cedar Rapids defenders. He raced in on a breakaway on Tirone and made a forehand, backhand move that fooled the goaltender. Kuhlman chipped the puck over Tirone's right pad for his 21st goal of the year to make it 3-2 RoughRiders with just over three minutes to play in the period.
In the third, Dubuque mounted one of its most impressive periods of the year. The Fighting Saints outshot Cedar Rapids 17-5 and outscored the RoughRiders 2-0. Dubuque tied the game on Eiserman's second goal of the game at 5:01. Phil Boje fluttered a wrist shot from the right point to the Cedar Rapids goal. Eiserman was stationed in front of Tirone and tipped the shot past the netminder's glove to make it 3-3.
Dubuque continued to press and finally scored the deciding goal in the dying minutes of the game. Six players engaged in a scrum along the boards behind the Dubuque net. The puck came free to the Fighting Saints who connected with Brett Boeing at center ice. Boeing darted in over the right wing and let a wrist shot fly towards the RoughRiders goal. Jarrid Privitera snuck in front and deflected the shot past Tirone's glove to give the Fighting Saints the 4-3 lead, and the eventual victory.
The Fighting Saints outshot the RoughRiders 41-23 on the evening. Dubuque was 0-for-2 on the powerplay while Cedar Rapids was not awarded a powerplay in the game.
