Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
ST. PAUL, MN- The Gary South Shore RailCats dropped to 0-3 on the season as the St. Paul Saints came back to beat the Cats 6-4 Saturday night in St. Paul. The Saints grabbed the lead in the first when Brandon Wikoff lead off with a double then came home on a fielder's choice two batters later by Evan Bigley to make it 1-0.
In the fourth the Saints picked up their second run on a solo shot by Brandon Tripp off of RailCats starter Stephen Hiscock (ND). Hiscock settled in and kept the Saints off the board as the RailCats would miss several chances to tie or take the lead. But in the top of the sixth Danny Pulfer answered the bell for the RailCats with a bases clearing triple off of Saints reliever Jon Plefka.
In the inning Craig Maddox lead off with a single and moved to second on a Justin Gominsky ground ball to third. Jeremey Hamilton then followed with a walk. Zac Mitchell hit a ball through on the right side of the infield for a base hit but the Saints were able to get Maddox at home trying to score for out number two with a 9-3-2 putout. With runners now at first and second Miles Walding walked to load the bases for Danny Pulfer who cleared them all to give the Cats a 3-2 lead. Drew Martinez followed with a perfect drag bunt on the right side of the infield to score Pulfer and the Cats lead 4-2.
Stephen Hiscock got a shutdown inning in the sixth and left with a 4-2 lead but the Saints would rally in the seventh. Hiscock allowed two earned runs on seven hits with a strike out in his first start of the year for Gary. James Parr came in for the RailCats and allowed a leadoff single to Joey Becker then with one out James Wikoff singled on a hit and run to put runners at the corners. Joe Bonfe singled to cut the lead to 4-3 scoring Becker. The next batter Evan Bigley then hit a three run homer to center to give the Saints the lead at 6-4 and close out the scoring.
The Saints pen kept the RailCats off the board in the seventh and eighth despite the RailCats batting with the tying run at the plate twice. Saints closer Dan Sattler worked a 1-2-3 ninth to notch the save for St. Paul. James Parr (0-1) was charged with the loss for Gary.
The two teams will play the final game of the four game series Sunday at 1:05 pm with RHP Stephen Bougher going for Gary and LHP Cole Nelson for St. Paul.
