Saints Come Back from Early Deficit to Take Series against Goldeyes in 7-4 Victory

SIOUX FALLS, SD - For the third consecutive game the St. Paul Saints walked the leadoff hitter in the game, Kevin LaChance. For the third consecutive game he came around to score and the Saints found themselves in an early hole. For the second time in three games they were able to come back. After falling behind 3-0 the Saints scored seven unanswered runs and defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 7-4 on Thursday night at Sioux Falls Stadium to take two out of three in the series.

With the Saints down 3-0 and two outs in the bottom of the third Mikey Reynolds reached on an infield single to third, extending his hitting streak to seven games. Nate Samson collected his first hit as a Saint with a single to right that was then misplayed by Logan Hill allowing Reynolds to go to third and Samson to take second. Chesny Young made it 3-1 with an infield single to third and John Silviano made it 3-2 with a sharp single to center.

The Saints tied the game in the fourth when Max Murphy doubled to left-center, moved to third on a single by JC Millan, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Mitch Ghelfi.

In the fifth the Saints took the lead for good as Josh Allen drilled a solo shot to left, his second of the season, giving the Saints a 4-3 lead.

In the seventh the Saints got some breathing room it turned out they would need. With two outs, Young singled to right as he finished off his fourth consecutive three-hit game. Silviano doubled Young to third and Allen came through with a two-run double making it 6-3. Silviano finished the night 3-4 with a double, RBI, and a run scored while Allen was 2-4 with a double, home run, three RBI and two runs scored. Murphy made it 7-3 with an RBI single to center.

The Goldeyes mounted a comeback in the ninth as Jameson McGrane walked the first two hitters in the inning. LaChance then lined out to first, but Darnell Sweeney followed with an RBI double to right. McGrane settled down and struck out Logan Hill before getting Kyle Martin to foul out to third on the ninth pitch of the at bat to end the game.

Eight of the nine Saints hitters collected a hit with the first six hitters all scoring at least a run.

Matt Solter, after giving up single runs in the first three innings, settled down after that allowing just one hit over the next four innings. He went 7.0 innings allowing three runs on five hits while walking four and striking out eight, running his record to 3-0 on the season.

The Saints welcome in the Milwaukee Milkmen to Sioux Falls Stadium on Friday night in the first game of a three-game series at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Mike Devine (1-1, 8.10) against Milkmen RHP Dylan Baker (0-0, 7.36). The game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM and seen on aabaseball.tv.
