Saints Add Veteran Leadership

September 8, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
San Angelo Saints News Release

San Angelo, TX—To achieve success, it is imperative for a sports team to have sound leadership. The San Angelo Saints fulfilled that requirement today with the addition of Dan Carney to the 2004-05 roster.

"Dan had a good year last year and is coming in to fill a leadership role for us," said Saints Head Coach/Assistant General Manager Ray Edwards. "He was the glue that held his team together last year in Roanoke; every team needs that."

Carney, 5'10" 180-pounds, is coming off an offensively best season, as he contributed a personal best 14 goals and 23 assists for 37 points with the Roanoke Express of the East Coast Hockey League. The Brooklyn, New York native took on an assistant coaching position for the Trenton Titans, also of the ECHL, after brief play in 2002 with the Toledo Storm. He made his coaching debut in December of that year and helped lead the team into post-season play.

The left-winger turned pro with the Nashville Knights of the ECHL after a successful junior season with the Des Moines Buccaneers of the United States Hockey League (USHL). In 48 appearances, he tallied 26 goals and 31 assists for 57 points. He made an impact early in his career as a leader by earning the Bob McCorkle Memorial Award for the Buccaneer player who exemplifies sportsmanship and dedication.

He has had a remarkable 10-year professional career, appearing in 573 regular season and playoff games, notching 61 goals and added 117 assists for 178 points and 375 penalty minutes. For the majority of his career, Carney played in the East Coast Hockey League, but has also made appearances in the Western Professional Hockey League, Central Hockey League, British National League, and the British Ice Hockey Superleague.

"I'm excited about coming to a different league," said Carney. "It will be exciting to play in different buildings and against a new set of guys. I try to lead by example and I believe that if you do the best you can, things will go right."

Head Coach Ray Edwards will look to Carney to use his veteran leadership and experience to guide the Saints.

"Dan is a great guy to have. He can play any position; he is big in the community and will really bring the group together."
