SaberCats' Thomas Earns Weekly Ironman Award

SAN JOSE, Calif. (March 18, 2003) – San Jose defensive specialist/kick returner Clevan Thomas was today named the Arena Football League's Ironman of the Week following his performance in the SaberCats win over Buffalo on March 14.

Thomas (5-10, 195, Florida State), who is in his second AFL season, led the SaberCats (5-2) with his two-way play in their 58-41 victory over the Buffalo Destroyers (3-4) on Friday. The former Seminole recorded 5.5 tackles, a pass breakup and his league-leading ninth interception on defense. The interception established an AFL record for consecutive games with an interce ption – his seventh.

On special teams, the defending ADT Defensive Player and Rookie of the Year tied a team single-game record by returning two kickoffs for scores and amassed 247 combined kick return yards, the third-highest single game total in club history.

New York's Mike Furrey was named Offensive Player of the week after grabbing a league season-high 15 receptions for 229 yards, six touchdowns and 288 all-purpose yards. Tampa Bay lineman Al Lucas earned ADT Defensive Player of the Week honors after recording four tackles – including 1.5 for a loss – a sack and a safety in a win over the previously undefeated Orlando Predators.

The SaberCats host Arizona in a re-match of last year's ArenaBowl on Sunday, March 23 at 3:00 p.m. Tickets for that game and all remaining home games at HP Pavilion are available and can be purchased through all Northern California TicketMaster outlets and at the HP Pavilion box office.
