
Furrey, Lucas, Thomas Honored

NEW YORK â New York Dragons offensive specialist MIKE FURREY, Tampa Bay Storm offensive/defensive lineman AL LUCAS and San Jose SaberCats defensive specialist/kick returner CLEVAN THOMAS have been named Offensive Player, ADT Defensive Player and Ironman of the Week, respectively, for Week 7 of the 2003 season.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Furrey (6-0, 185, Northern Iowa), in his second AFL season, hauled in an AFL season-high 15 receptions for 229 yards, six touchdowns and 288 all-purpose yards, while leading the Dragons to a 65-57 overtime win against the Detroit Fury (3-4) on Sunday. His 15 receptions also tied a franchise record held by MIKE HORACEK. The former Panther currently leads the AFL in scoring (156), receiving touchdowns (25), receptions (64) and receiving yards (989). This marks the third time Furrey has earned an AFL weekly honor.
ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Lucas (6-1, 294, Troy State), who is in his first AFL season, led the Tampa Bay Storm defense by recording four tackles â including 1.5 for a loss â a sack and a safety which allowed the Storm (5-2) to secure a 52-32 home victory over the previously undefeated Orlando Predators (6-1) on Sunday. The former Trojan leads Storm linemen in sacks (2.0) and tackles (10.5). This marks the first time Lucas has earned an AFL weekly honor.
IRONMAN OF THE WEEK
Thomas (5-10, 195, Florida State), who is in his second AFL season, led San Jose (5-2) with his two-way play in the SaberCats' 58-41 home victory over the Buffalo Destroyers (3-4) on Sunday. The former Seminole recorded 5.5 tackles, a pass breakup and his league-leading ninth interception on defense. The interception established an AFL record for consecutive games with an interception â his seventh. On special teams, the defending ADT Defensive Player and Rookie of the Year recorded 177 kickoff return yards, including a 54-yard touchdown return, and amassed 259 all-purpose yards. This marks the first time Thomas has earned an AFL weekly honor.
Offensive Player of the Week candidates included: Arizona's Sherdrick Bonner, Chicago's Antonio Chatman, Georgia's Dan Curran, Grand Rapids' Willis Marshall, Los Angeles' Chris Jackson, Tampa Bay's Lawrence Samuels.
ADT Defensive Player of the Week candidates included: Arizona's Hunkie Cooper, Dallas' Tim Martin, Georgia's Kevin Gaines, Indiana's Hugh Hunter, New York's Donvetis Franklin, San Jose's Clevan Thomas and Sam Hernandez.
Ironman of the Week candidates included: Arizona's Hunkie Cooper, Chicago's Levelle Brown, Detroit's Marcus Nash, Georgia's Darryl Hammond, Grand Rapids' Chris Avery, Las Vegas' Sedrick Robinson,. Los Angeles' Greg Hopkins, San Jose's James Roe and Tampa Bay's Lawrence Samuels.
