
SaberCats QB Grieb named player of the month

SAN JOSE, Calif. (May 6, 2004) - After being named the Arena Football League's Player of the Week on Tuesday, San Jose quarterback Mark Grieb was today named the AFL's Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player of the Month for April.
Grieb (6-3, 208) earned his second Player of the Month award of the year by completing 94-of-132 (71.2%) passes for 1,165 yards with 26 touchdowns and one interception as the AFLWA's No. 1 ranked SaberCats went 3-1 for the month.
The former UC Davis star threw for a team record tying nine touchdowns and a season-high 351 yards in San Jose's 62-55 win against the defending ArenaBowl champion Tampa Bay Storm on April 4 and completed over 70 percent of his passes in three of the four games during the month. The league leader in pass efficiency also compiled a rating of 134.6 for the month.
This marks the fourth time this season that the 2002 Offensive Player of the Year has earned an AFL award. Grieb earned the Week 6 and Week 13 Offensive Player award and was also tabbed the February Offensive Player of the Month.
New Orleans VooDoo defensive specialist Monty Montgomery was named the ADT Defensive Player of the Month; Tampa Bay Storm wide receiver/defensive back T.T. Toliver earned U.S. Army Ironman of the Month; Chicago Rush wide receiver/linebacker Etu Molden was tabbed Rookie of the Month and Orlando Predators kicker Jay Taylor won Kicker of the Month.
The SaberCats return to action on Sunday, May 9, when they travel to Arizona for a confrontation with the Rattlers. The game will be regionally televised by NBC beginning at Noon (PT). San Jose returns to the HP Pavilion at San Jose on Saturday, May 22, when they entertain Jon Bon Jovi's Philadelphia Soul.
