
AFL honors five players with monthly awards for April

NEW YORK â San Jose quarterback MARK GRIEB, New Orleans VooDoo defensive specialist MONTY MONTGOMERY, Tampa Bay Storm wide receiver/defensive back T.T. TOLIVER, Chicago Rush wide receiver/linebacker ETU MOLDEN and Orlando Predators kicker JAY TAYLOR have been named Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player, ADT Defensive Player, U.S. Army Ironman, Rookie, and Kicker of the Month, respectively, for April of the 2004 season.
BABY RUTH REAL DEAL OFFENSIVE: Grieb (6-3, 208, California-Davis) completed 94-for-132 (71.2%) passes for 1,165 yards, 26 touchdowns, one interception and a 134.6 passer rating, while the AFLWA's No. 1-ranked SaberCats went 3-1 in April. Grieb, who earned Offensive Player of the Week honors in Weeks 6 and 13, leads the AFL with in passer rating (137.6). This marks the third time that the 2002 Offensive Player of the Year has earned an AFL monthly award and second time this season (February).
ADT DEFENSIVE: Montgomery (6-0, 195, Houston) recorded 23.5 tackles, one tackle for a loss, two fumble recoveries, including one for a 42-yard touchdown return, two interceptions and four passes defensed to help the VooDoo finish 2-1 in April. Montgomery was named Defensive Player of the Week for his effort against Columbus (April 18) when he had 12 solo tackles, one assisted tackle, one tackle for a two-yard loss, a 42-yard fumble return for a touchdown, a 14-yard interception return and two passes defensed. This marks the first time that the former Cougar has earned an AFL monthly award.
U.S. ARMY IRONMAN: Toliver (5-11, 185, Bethune-Cookman) averaged over 200 all-purpose yards per game while the defending champions went 2-2 for April. In four games, Toliver amassed 801 all-purpose yards and scored seven touchdowns. He hauled in 19 receptions for 267 yards and four touchdowns. Toliver also returned 20 kickoffs for 499 yards and three touchdowns and had one missed field-goal return for 32 yards. Defensively, Toliver recorded 14.0 total tackles to go along with two forced fumbles and an interception. This marks the first time that the former Wildcat has earned an AFL monthly award.
ROOKIE: In four games, Molden (6-2, 195, Montana) collected 37 receptions for 492 yards and eight touchdowns while earning Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player of the Game twice. The Chicago Rush (8-4) went 2-2 in April. Defensively, Molden recorded 6.5 tackles and recovered a fumble. The former Grizzly leads all rookies with 76 receptions while adding 966 yards, 21 total touchdowns and 132 points. This marks the first time that Molden has earned an AFL award.
KICKER: Taylor (6-1, 196, West Virginia) was near perfect in April, hitting nine consecutive field goals. The former Mountaineer was 9-for-9 on field goals, including a long of 50 yards, and 21-for-23 on extra points as the Predators went 3-1 in April. This marks the first time that Taylor has earned an AFL monthly honor.
