Albany River Rats News Release
WORCESTER, MA - Albany River Rats All-Star left wing Michael Ryan shined as he scored two goals and added one assist to help the PlanetUSA AHL All-Stars to a 14-11 victory over the Canadian AHL All-Stars at the 2009 AHL All-Star Classic Monday night at the DCU Center in Worcester.
Making his first career AHL All-Star appearance, Ryan had a game-high nine shots on goal and his two goals, which came consecutively in the second period, kept the PlanetUSA team within striking distance. Former River Rat defenseman Bryan Helmer scored at 4:04 of the second period to give the Canadian All-Stars a 5-2 lead, but Ryan answered back just 23 seconds later when he buried a pass from Jared Ross and Matthias Karlsson at 4:27. After the longest scoring lull of the game, 11:38 without a goal, Ryan again found the net, this time unassisted when he stole Houston goaltender Barry Brust's clearing pass and slotted a wrist shot through the scrambling netminder's pads at 16:05. The Boston, Massachusetts native's second goal of the night brought the score to 5-4, but the Canadian All-Stars pulled ahead to take an 8-5 lead into the third period.
In the final frame Ryan made a beautiful cross-ice pass to Binghamton rookie defenseman Matthias Karlsson who buried his shot into the roof of the net to spark a dramatic third-period rally by the PlanetUSA All-Stars; they would end up scoring a record nine goals in the third period for a come-from-behind 14-11 win over the Canadian All-Stars.
Six former River Rats participated in the 2009 All-Star Classic: Hershey defenseman Bryan Helmer, Hershey center Keith Aucoin, Lake Erie defenseman Kyle Cumiskey, Lake Erie goaltender Tyler Weiman, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton left wing Chris Minard and Providence defenseman Johnny Boychuk. Helmer and Cumiskey each had a goal and an assist for the Canadian All-Stars; they were also tied for a game-high +6 plus/minus rating. Weiman played the third period for the Canadian squad and took the loss while making eight saves on 15 shots. Aucoin, Boychuk and Minard were all held scoreless in the game.
The River Rats will return to action on Thursday, January 29th at Scope Arena in Virginia as they face the Norfolk Admirals at 7:15 pm. Following their three game road trip, Albany will host the Portland Pirates on Saturday, February 7th for a 5:00 pm face off at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
River Rats flex ticket packages and individual game tickets are on sale now at the River Rats office and the Times Union Center Box Office. For more information please contact the Albany River Rats at (518) 487-2244 or online at www.albanyriverrats.com.
