January 15, 2012 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Kitchener Rangers News Release
The Kitchener Rangers picked up a 5-2 win over the Kingston Frontenacs Sunday night. Ryan Murphy led the way with the winning goal and three assists and was named the game's first star.
Radek Faksa opened the scoring for Kitchener at 12:37 of the first period with a shot that beat Jacob Riley high glove side. The Czech-born import leads all league rookies with 18 goals and 19 assists on the year. Defenseman Murphy was credited with the assist.
Less than three minutes later, the Rangers extended their lead to two on the power play, with Tyler Randell sliding the puck under Riley for his second of the season. The goal was his first at The Aud since he returned to the team one week ago. Murphy and Faksa each picked up their second points of the night with helpers on the play.
Kingston out-shot Kitchener 12-10 in the opening period.
Jean Dupuy got the Frontenacs on the board 31 seconds into the second frame, firing a quick shot by Rangers netminder Franky Palazzese. Assisting on the freshman forward's third of the year was Spencer Green.
The Rangers took a 3-1 lead just over two minutes later, when Murphy came in with speed and got Riley moving to the right before moving the puck to his backhand and burying it in the open side of the net. His second goal of the season was also his third point of the night. Assists went to Curtis Meighan and Josh Sterk.
Cody Sol tallied his ninth of the season with a shot from just inside the blue line that found the top right corner of the net. The overage blueliner has set a new career high in points with 18 through 37 games. Murphy picked up his third helper of the night on the play. Also assisting was sophomore winger Tobias Rieder.
The Rangers led shots on goal in the second with a 16-13 advantage.
Zach Lorentz was awarded a penalty shot early in third period after being hauled down in front of the Kingston net. The Waterloo-native lifted the puck high blocker-side for his 14th of the year, putting the Rangers up 5-1.
Cody Alcock scored his 15th of the season midway through the final frame to cut the Rangers' lead to three. The Kingston captain has recorded ten points in his last nine games. Assisting on the play was rookie Ryan Kujawinski, who has at least one point in every game since being traded to the Frontenacs from Sarnia earlier this month. Also picking up an assist was blueliner Warren Steele.
Kitchener out-shot Kingston 16-15 in the final frame, finishing with a 42-40 overall advantage. Palazzese stopped 37 shots in his first game against his former club.
With the win, the Rangers improve to 28-12-1-0, while the Frontenacs sit at 12-27-2-2.
