Vancouver, B.C. - The 2018 CIBC Canada Russia Series is even at 1-1 thanks to some late third period heroics from the Russians. Tuesday night in front of a crowd of 4134 at the Langley Events Centre, Team Russia edged Team WHL 3-1 on the strength of two late third period goals that 52 seconds apart. Ty Smith had Team WHL's only goal which came 5:10 into the first period. The major story of the game for Team WHL was Vancouver Giants goaltender David Tendeck who stopped 25 of 27 shots he faced to earn Player of the Game honors for Team WHL.
1st Period:
Spokane Chiefs defenceman/New Jersey Devils first-rounder Ty Smith opened the scoring for Team WHL at 5:10 with a shot from the left-point that snuck through traffic and past Russian starter Pyotr Kochetkov. Russia answered on a similar play at 19:07 when LA Kings prospect Bulat Shafigullin parked himself in front of David Tendeck and deflected home a point shot from Evgeny Kalabushkin. Shots through one period were 18-8 for Team WHL.
2nd Period:
Neither team solved the other in the middle frame. Russia outshot Team WHL 11-9.
3rd Period:
David Tendeck made a series of clutch saves for Team WHL to keep the game tied 1-1. He made two terrific saves off Russian forward Kirill Slepets on a shorthanded breakaway attempt. Moments later on a power play of their own, Russia would strike to make it 2-1. Stepan Starkov knocked home a rebound past Tendeck at 18:18 and 52 seconds later Ivan Muranov ended all hopes of a WHL comeback when he scored into the empty net.
