Rapid City Rush News Release
Rapid City, S.D. - Down 2-0 to begin the third period, the Rapid City Rush rallied to score three unanswered goals, including the game-winner with 28.1 seconds remaining, to defeat the Rocky Mountain Rage 3-2 at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.
After a slow start through the game's first 10 minutes for both teams, the Rush started to assert themselves but were either unable to beat Rocky Mountain goaltender Marty Magers or, on a pair of their best chances in the period, missed the net.
Daymen Rycroft began to turn the tide for the Rage when he spun and fired after reeling in a loose puck in the slot. His ninth of the year gave Rocky Mountain a 1-0 lead at 18:15. Tyler Butler upped the advantage to 2-0 at 19:40, hammering home his fourth of the season with the teams skating four-on-four.
Despite controlling play for the most part in the second period, Rocky Mountain was unable to add to its lead and entered the third still in front 2-0.
The Rush rally began at 5:20 of the final frame when Jon Pelle scored off what appeared to be a misfired centering pass that eluded Magers. Rapid City then squared the contest on a fluky shot from the near half wall. With the puck on edge, Rich Hansen flung a shot toward the net that skipped past Magers at 7:46.
Tied at three for the next 11+ minutes, the game appeared headed to overtime. In transition in the final minute, the Rush entered the Rage end and generated a flurry in front of Magers. The Rage netminder, who set a new team record for longest shutout streak that ended at 135:42 once Rapid City scored its first goal tonight, made three consecutive stops from close range. On a fourth bid, though, Chris Lipsett jammed the puck into the net for the game winner at 19:31.
The Rush took over sole possession of second place in the Northwest Division with the victory, dropping the Rage into third with a record of 8-12-2 and 18 points.
Rocky Mountain has the opportunity to avenge tonight's difficult loss, though, when a home-and-home set concludes between the two rivals on Thursday at Broomfield Event Center at 7:05 p.m. The Rage then host the Northeast Division-leading Oklahoma City Blazers on Dec. 20 and 21 at the BEC. Saturday's game begins at 7:05 p.m. while Sunday's face-off is at 3:05 p.m.
