DES MOINES - The Iowa Barnstormers have re-signed kicker Gabriel Rui to the 2022 roster, Head Coach Dave Mogensen announced today.
Rui (5-11, 190, Kansas) joins the Iowa Barnstormers for his second season in the Indoor Football League (IFL) and with the team. Rui joined the IFL for his rookie season in 2021 as a member of the Massachusetts Pirates. He appeared in the first three games of the season with the Pirates completing 16 of 17 PATs, two of three field goals, and one deuce. Rui joined the Iowa Barnstormers midway through the season appearing in seven regular season games and one playoff game. With the goggles on, Rui completed 34 of 38 PATs, 12 of 14 field goals, and earned league honors as the IFL Special Team's Player of the Week in week 16.
Collegiately, Rui played at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M converting 30 of 35 field goals during his two years with the school and making an impact earning Second-Team All-Conference as a freshman and First-Team All-Conference as a sophomore. Rui then transferred to the University of Kansas to finish out his collegiate career. In his two years as a Jayhawk, Rui appeared in 22 games, where he completed 29 of 34 field goals and racked up numerous honors including First Rank in the Big 12 Conference for field goal percentage, Third-Team All-Big 12, and Honorable Mention Big-12 in 2017 and Pre-Season All-Big 12 in 2018.
"Many times the difference between a win and a loss can be traced back to the kicking game," said Head Coach Mogensen. "Based on that fact, we identified Gabriel as one of the key 2021 players we needed to re-sign. He is a rising star kicker who we are extremely happy to have back in the fold for 2022."
Rui will join the Barnstormers Training Camp this spring.
