Rua's Clutch Hit Provides Difference in 4-1 Indians Victory
June 26, 2012 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Spokane Indians News Release
Spokane, WA -You never get a second chance to make a first impression. Spokane infielder Ryan Rua doesn't seem to care. After a short seven game stint with the Indians in 2011, Rua spent the rest of the year honing his craft in Arizona, working tirelessly for another shot with Spokane. He got his redemption on Monday night.
Rua drilled a two-run single past a drawn in Boise infield in the sixth inning, and Spokane's pitchers held the Hawks' high-octane offense to just six hits as the Indians snagged a 4-1 victory in front of 3,275 fans at Avista Stadium for Gone Fishing Giveaway & Smokey Bear Night presented by MacKenzie River Pizza Company, U.S. Forest Service, and Rock 94 1/2.
Spokane starter Eric Brooks allowed just two hits and one run in three innings and a sterling Shawn Blackwell (1-0) picked up the win with four scoreless frames. Josh McElwee nabbed the Indians first save of the season, striking out Shawon Dunston Jr. with runners on first and second in the top of the ninth inning to end the game.
Electrifying leadoff man Chris Garia went 2-3 and scored three runs while Barrett Serrato and Joe Maloney each picked up one hit in the win.
Former Spokane Indian and current Boise hitting coach Bill Buckner was honored during the game's second inning. Buckner was part of the 1970 Spokane squad that is widely considered the best minor league baseball team of all-time.
Tomorrow is the second game of a three game homestand against the Boise Hawks and is Fields of Green Night presented by Pacific Golf & Turf, Hits 96.1, 1280 KPTQ, and Out There Monthly.
